beta5 to mepis 7

It'll be wise if I install the beta5 and use it for a stable system, if I don't perform a clean install when the 7.0 will be released?

Thanks

If I install 6.5 I can upgrade easily to 7?

No. 6.5 and 7 use a different base

Mepis 6.5 uses a kernel modified from the Ubuntu 6.06 pool and packages to suit, so the list of programs you can use is limited to those from the ageing ubuntu 6.06 pool. Ubuntu starts with a debian kernel, modifies it and creates a whole range of packages to work with their modified kernel. Mepis 6.0 and 6.5 took that as a base and Warren worked his magic into it and provided the Mepis community with a much improved system, expecting that the "long term support" promised by Ubuntu would include updated packages, but they only include security updates, not package updates, hence the ageing pool.
With Mepis 7, Warren has reverted back from Ubuntu with a modified Debian kernel to Debian which means that Mepis 7 uses a kernel modified directly from the Debian pool, so it gives the users greater flexibility for upgrading packages (programs) to the latest versions available in the Debian pool and some from other Debian based pools, like ubuntu.
The limitations of 6.5 mean that an upgrade can only be performed successfully by erasing your existing mepis 6.5 system and doing a fresh install with Mepis 7, but the real answer on is based on how you set up your system during the first install, if you should decide to install 6.5 prior to "upgrading to 7"
If you pre-partition your drive to separate your /home from the rest of the system, upgrading will be relatively painless because you can keep /home and your files and preferences.
ps - sorry for the rant

Let me re-state that with emphasis added:
"If you pre-partition your drive to separate your /home from the rest of the system, upgrading will be relatively painless because you can keep /home and your files and preferences."
Expect some oddities in doing this, and create a new user account as a part of the installation process, as a fall-back login. In other words, don't rely upon a migrated user account as your primary login.

Just a short note, MEPIS is able to preserve /home even if it's installed on the same partition with root. That's one of the small things that won me over when I discovered MEPIS.

The temptation was great.
I wiped Kubuntu and installed mepis 7.
I left mepis in April when I was disappointed for the 6.5 based on Ubuntu 6.06.
I used it in VirtualBox any way.
But this beta is great and now I installed on my production system.
It's very solid!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Very Updated!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
All things works!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you Warren Woodford for an excellent work!

No. The beta_5 for release

No. The beta_5 for release 7 of SM, is beta software, and not appropriate for use as a production platform. If you want a stable release, you will either have to wait until 7.0 goes final, or use 6.5.02 (32|64).
