My guess would be to open Camstream or Skype and see if all is well, you may have to do that as su from konsole. I havent had any luck except in Kooks of all things with my old Ezonics cam with the later Mepis releases ( i can take snapsshots with it) but the older 2.4.29 kernel works great with it. I have never used Skype so i cant be of any help there. I get a seg-fault lately with Camstream and i dont know if it is my hardware or Camstream needs to be brought up to date, i suspect the latter. I would be interested as to how it works on your rig and what version of Mepis you are running. Good luck!

Thanks. Could not get it to

Thanks. Could not get it to work. Tried rebooting several times, but camstream always fails to detect my device; when I start camstream from root, I get "failed to open configuration file for reading"; suggests I have to find the configuration file and edit it in some way or adjust permissions. Not sure how to edit it. Running caminfo from alvin or root gives me
"Detected 0 Video4Linux devices". Running skype from root does not seem to help. Moving cam from hub to computer not help. green light stays on throughout. Lsusb shows the device is recognized. Bus 005 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 004 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 004 Device 002: ID 046d:092f Logitech, Inc.
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 0000:0000

Bus 001 Device 001: ID 0000:0000

Again thanks; any other ideas?

There is a .camstream file

There is a .camstream file in my /home/alvin.

Not sure if this can be edited, how to do it.

Aagain there is a camstream

Aagain there is a camstream file in /etc/menu

?package(camstream):\
needs="X11"\
section="Apps/Viewers"\
title="Camstream"\
command="/usr/bin/camstream" \
icon="/usr/share/pixmaps/camstream.xpm"\
generic="WebCam Utility"\
categories=Network;X-KDE-More

Not sure if anything can be done here

camstream

I think the program was compiled originally with an earlier version of gcc as i have been having problems with dependencies when trying to configure to make an install, the qt3 files have changed or been obsoleted and are no longer compatible. Maybe some of the Gnome apps will work in some cases but im thinking will have to wait for it to catch up, one of the bleeding edge pitfalls.

Skype on the other hand i dont know anything about, maybe google can shine some light.

Did you check this?

Assuming you are talking about MEPIS 6.5:

Other info in the Wiki under webcam.

Hope this helps.
