Newbie Installed SimplyMepis 6.5, no dial tone, no CD sound, DVD doen't play.

I know so little about computers, except how to use them to send email, chat, surf the net and make sales on ebay.
I probably don't know enough to give you the information you need to help me. But here goes.
I have had terrible problems during the last few months with viruses and what appears to be a resident hacker, despite expensive security software. I am sick of windows and when a friend suggested I try Linux, I was ready to try anything.
I just installed SimplyMepis 6.5 into my 2006 Compac Presario V5305WM laptop. The installation seemed problem free and easy. After installation, I configured the KPPP dialup, with username, password and number. But when I attempted a connection, I got the no dial tone message.
I later discovered a modem window in the KPPP configuration area, don't know if I need to put the name in, if I do, I don't know what type of modem is in my computer...and dispite many searches have not found it.
Also when I put a CD in, the CD player seems to be playing it, but there is no sound, even after adjusting it on the mepis screen. Also, the DVD media player, it just spins the DVD a few seconds and nothing happens.
Any help you might offer will be greatly appreciated.
I would like to get Linux working myself if I can.
I you do decide to take me on.
Just keep your instructions very simple and be patient with me. If you think it's over my head, just say and I will try to find someone at a computer shop who knows something about it and can do it for me.
Thanks.

The sound and DVD are probably minor: see

I agree on taking the modem question to MepisLovers, where you will need to register again.
Good luck.
Alsaconf?

That's a great Wiki, Jerry. Somebody's been doing good work. But there doesn't seem to be any reference to alsaconf.
I'm using antiX all the time now and can't recall whether alsaconf even operates under Mepis 6.5. It seems I read somewhere that it doesn't (??). It used to be the first thing to check if sound didn't work, but my sound cards have worked right off for so long that I never have to do alsaconf anymore.
Just checked alsaconf in antiX and boom, there it is. So maybe it is something toad frog should check...
Alsa not in Mepis 6.x

...so most of the refs were removed early this year. It will be available in MEPIS 7 I imagine, since the new series is going back to Debian, so we'll probably end up putting it right back in...
Thanks for the comment about the Wiki--a lot of us have put serious time into writing and organizing it!

Thanks to all of you, really appreciate the quick response.
Malanrich-interesting to know my modem might be easy to adapt to SimplyMepis.
You know, I'm just starting to enjoy getting SimplyMepis settled into my computer. The idea of roaming the internet in a safe, quiet environment is hard to imagine.
It will be so sweet when I get online that first time.
I am on the way to Mepislovers.
Thanks again, nice welcome to your site.

Hi toad frog,
I think the kinds of questions you're asking are being answered at Mepislovers.org these days. Can't recall if you need a new sign-in name or not. Give your old one a try. Everyone's friendly there and it's easy to post questions.
One suggestion: gather as much information as you can about each problem in order to give the helpers there as much to go on as possible. Ex: your modem problem is interesting because many laptop modems won't get as far as "No Dial Tone." If you have a winmodem, kPPP won't even be able to find it. But maybe you have a compatible modem after all. I *think* "No Dial Tone" means the modem can't make the connection...but at least the modem is working. So any additional information on this will help diagnose.
I'm new at this too, but I've gotten everything working because everyone in the forums (here and at Mepislovers) has been very helpful.
