HOWTO: GET WEP TO WORK ON MEPIS :D
Posts: 2
This thread is for all of the people who need help getting WEP to work on Mepis. I just got it working on my computer and I really want to share how I did it so it can make getting wireless setup easier.
*after I submitted this* I think I put this in the wrong forum area if so then sorry
OK first of all this tutorial is going to explain what you do AFTER you install ndiswrapper.
So here we go
Note: I am using Mepis 6.5 so where the Network Manager for Mepis is may vary
First of all when you are going to connect using WEP (or any type of network using Mepis) Use the "Mepis Network Manager" Do not use "Knetworkmanager" "Mepis Network Manager" handles WEP much much much better. Go to the Mepis start menu-> system->Mepis->Mepis Network Assistant. On the top it will say "Interface Configuration Mode".
Make sure that it is set to "Manual (mnetwork)". If it is not already set to that set it to "Manual (mnetwork)". If you do have to click the mnetwork one it may ask you to reboot. Don't reboot. I will go over rebooting in a bit. So after you make sure that it is set to "Manual (mnetwork)" go to the "Wireless" Tab. Type in the name of your gateway and then click "WEP (some security)" type in your WEP. Leave "restricted mode" unchecked. Then hit apply. If it asks you to reboot still don't reboot. If it says that the network is going to be started in 15 seconds just hit OK and wait until that finishes.
Anyways lets continue, after you do all the typing in of the Gateway and all of that WEP nonsense we come to the final part of this tutorial. Go to the "Interfaces" Tab. The top will say "settings for" and then a type of connection. Make sure that it is set to "WLAN0" Since it is a wireless card. If you already have ndiswrapper configured with your card then WLAN0 should work. Then there will be some boxes to check. Check the one that says "Start/Restart on Apply" Then hit apply and then a box should come up saying that the interface will restart this may take up to 30 seconds.
Hit OK and it will attempt to connect. I am about 95% sure that this will work and when it is done connecting in the "Interfaces" tab you will see the word "Status" if it connected successfully then it will say "Connected With IP (whatever your IP is)". Now go to your web browser and see if it works. If not THEN that is the time to reboot.
Also for some reason I have the "Interfaces" tab to set as "Start At Boot" but when I boot my computer It does not connect to the computer.
If this happens to you then don't worry you do not have to redo this whole thing. Just go to the Mepis Network Assistant again-> on the "General" tab at the bottom hit Start/Restart network. If that does not work go to the "Interfaces" tab and then check the box "Start/Restart on Apply and it will start the internet up. Trust me it only takes a second to start the internet back up after you reboot.
If you have any other questions please feel free to post here
Thanks for this

Everybody appreciates the time you put into describing your successful procedure. When you have time, could you take a look at the Wiki section on this topic
http://www.mepis.org/docs/en/index.php/Adjust_the_wireless_connection
and see if it needs any modification in the light of your experience? That would be great.
