Sound after upgrade/update
Posts: 386
If you have no sound after an apt-get update/upgrade try apt-get install alsa, and rerun Kmix in KDE to reset your volume values.?? The driver isntallation asks what chipset your soundcard has, so please goto 'hardware info' in KDE prior to alsa installation.
The reason for this is that you had Kmix open when you did the upgrade; the little speaker by your clock, and no OS can update/upgrade files that are in use.
Prevention of this is to su to root in Konsole, and type init 3,?? Login as root at the prompt, and then do your apt-get update/upgrade.?? Since all X-Server files are closed in an init 3 boot, all files will be updated properly.?? After the update/upgrade type init 5 to change back to a graphical boot.
Hope this helps.
I have done these exact processes

I have done these exact procedures... as well as any others I can find in the Mepis forums, yet still no sound after upgrading. I did reinstall once and it worked again, however, I was required to update arts as part of another package because of apt.
Any other suggestions? I have a "Intel Corp.|82801BA/BAM AC'97 Audio" soundcard (Dell SmartStep 250N) and have never had any problems with it throughout all the distributions I have used... Getting sort of tired of watching movies w/o any sound...
Is there some big secret I'm missing? I've installed alsa, set the volume, checked the audio group and all are in there, and done this all at init 3...
I have also tried changing in the Control Center to use ALSA rather than "auto detect" (and rebooted after each of these steps).
I saw in one persons questioning that AC97 needs to be loaded seperately for sound?... When I run sndconfig it detects and does something with AC97... any suggestions?

EDIT: Okay, since then, done modprobe ac97_* and gotten no errors when doing that...
What's going on! I searched for my sound card name on google, and got a bunch of people with Redhat problems... Funny thing is, for the years I used redhat on this machine, I never once had a sound problem (nor with any other debian-based thing per chance)...
so with this whole sound thing, what do I do? I know I was using like "artsd" before, but that gives me the "can't find /dev/dsp" (even though it exists), and i thought i used to use OSS, but I'm not sure... never messed with sound before because I've never had a problem with it at all...
NOW When I try to resert ARTSD in my Control Center, I get "device /dev/dsp can't be opened (Device or resource busy)" am I even on the right track?
ANy suggestions will be helpful at this point...

I ran sndconfig again, and this time it told me:
A PCI sound card was found in your system. The details are:
Model: Intel Corp.|82801BA/BAM AC'97 Audio
I "ok"
and it gives me:
The Intel Corp.|82801BA/BAM AC'97 Audio is not currently supported"
WTF... why has it worked with every other system, and why did it work before the stupid upgrade?!
