No sound after update/upgrade

If you have no sound after an apt-get update/upgrade try apt-get install alsa, and rerun Kmix in KDE to reset your volume values.?? The driver isntallation asks what chipset your soundcard has, so please goto 'hardware info' in KDE prior to alsa installation.

The reason for this is that you had Kmix open when you did the upgrade; the little speaker by your clock, and no OS can update/upgrade files that are in use.

Prevention of this is to su to root in Konsole, and type init 3,?? Login as root at the prompt, and then do your apt-get update/upgrade.?? Since all X-Server files are closed in an init 3 boot, all files will be updated properly.?? After the update/upgrade type init 5 to change back to a graphical boot.

Hope this helps.Do NOT do an apt-get dist-upgrade

Now it works

Thx a a lot.

Now it works and I'll always remember "init 3" before apt-get upgrade.

Is this still needed ?

Curious what version of Mepis this topic covers?

I have 3.3 now without any updating or upgrades thus far.

NO Sound

Mepis version 3.3

No sound for any sound cards

getting dsp error

alsconf will get sound working, but gone on re-boot

kernel 2.6.10

Also tried 7 other sound cards and all the same

modified the module file to include the driver module etc.

module loads, however dsp error

When running alsaconf and autodetect again from control center, then sound works again as long as I don't re-boot

My other system works perfect, but this one is my main one, I want the sound to work.

Please advise

No sound...

Well, I just installed SimplyMEPIS 3.3.1-1 in the hdd of my 2nd PC, and the sound doesn work... It?? an integrated Via soundcard, from a Biostar motherboard... In the control panel, it says the driver is installed. The alsa stuff is up and running, according to apt-get...
The volume is up to the max in Kmix...
I had the same problem in my main PC, running the Mepis live-cd... It?? an Asrock board, with integrated SIS soundcard...
If any of you guys have a suggestion, that would be great, since I am pretty much a newcomer to Mepis... Thenks.

Sound

I was able to get my sound working on my VIA board with the AC97 compatible sound system via8235 sound chip.

I had to bring up console, then logon to console as root by typing su, then enter, then type root password then enter.

Then type alsaconf to run a alsa configuration program.

After this follows the instructions on screen.

Then go to control center, then sound and multimedia, then sound system.

Note: the apply button is not active.
Make any selection and then un-select something in order to get the apply button to become active. Or you can select the hardware tab and then autodetect.

Then back to the General tab, to test the sound.

Also check your kmixer to be sure that your headphones are on.
meaning the green light is lit.

Then adjust headphones sound and try to test sound again.

This worked for me on my via8235, and works perfect, however it works as long as the computer is on, and if I reboot, then I get the dsp error again.

As far as the SIS sound chip goes I'm not sure why that does not work, my other computer works perfect with that, perhaps update your alsa-base, alsa-ultilites and alsa-modules if there is an update for alsa-modules for your particular kernel.

Thats about all I know as a Noob, but learning fast.

Post your findings after you've tried that.

Hope this helps

No sound after update/upgrade

I had no sound after installing Mepis. I stumbled upon your instructions for restoring sound and tried it, they worked perfectly for me. I am very new to Linux and was able to easily fix this problem. Thank you!

Still fighting to get that sound !!!

Thank you for your help, I tried to make it work following the instructions, but no such luck !
I have now Mepis installed in dual-boot on my main pc, with an Asrock motherboard, the integrated sound driver is from SIS...
I really wish I could make that sound work, so I could stay a 100% in Mepis, to watch videos, listen music and radio...

If ever any of you guys have an idea, that would be welcome, thaks in advance...

I fixed mine too

After much trials and errors it turns out that my problem was with the usb-audio device, actually the usb mic built into my logitech pro 4000, being treated as a first audio device and the actual sound card was getting treated as the card-1 instead

I added this line to the sound file within the modprobe.d directory

alias snd-card-0 snd-via82xx
options snd-via82xx index=0
# NOTE: snd-via82xx is my sound-card module
alias snd-card-1 snd-usb-audio
options snd-usb-audio index=1

And sound works great on re-boot and re-start now.

I still get a alsactl restore failed, but for now at least all is working fine.

Sound OK, except KsCD

Had no sound on laptop, added intel8x0m to the hotplug blacklist as per a hint somewhere. Now XINE works, the splash screen makes sounds, but cannot play audio CD. The mixer tab for CD is active(red) and turned up, not sure why the AudioCD seems to be a sore point for a few folks, and is reluctant even after the rest is fixed OK.
Btw, first Mepis install last nite, it's a great piece of work. I had tried SUSE desktop, but it looked like hell and I blew it away instead of trying to fix it. Mepis is a very agreeable out-of-the-box experience. I do a lot of Solaris work so I know Unix, this is my first stab at Linux after fighting viruses too long! Keep up the good work.

upgrading from 6.5beta7 to

upgrading from 6.5beta7 to RC2 and at some stage sound was lost on two PC's
the fix was to add the user to the audio group
kuser > edit user > tick [x] Audio
