Wireless connection!

Sick of being bullied and fleeced by MS, I decided to shift all six of my machines to LINUX. I saw the Mepis book in Borders , it looked good, so I bought the CD. All went well and I was very excited (well, as excited as a 73 year old is allowed to get!) . I love it and having used Open Office since it's German progenator, all my files transferred easily. But, than came the shock! I went the university, where I still work (I use the term loosely), and tried to log on to the campus-wide wireless network. No luck. So I fled downtown (we are a wireless net city) but still no luck. I drove home (almost in tears) and tried my home wireless network. Nothing!!! I decided to go back in time and actually plugged the machine into a ethernet connection. Worked beautifully but so what, I need to be free! Even at Starbucks all I could get was coffee! Now this is not good . So I appeal to you obviously beautiful people who have produced and maintain such a wonderful ( if a little bit handicapped) thing as Mepis. Tell me which key I should press to get that little window with the list of wireless networks? I use notebooks by Dell, HP, and Averatec, and they're all laughing at me.

p.s. if you don't help me I'll send my six daughters after you!

Must... Have... Infor(cough)mation...

Hi Rufus. Welcome to Mepis.

Glad things work when you're wired. Sad you're not working wirelessly Sad

Can you please provide us with information on your 'puter? Make, model, stuff like that? Also, since it's a network thing that's not netting, please give us information on the type of network card that you are using.

I'm probably not the one with the answers here, but that doesn't prevent me from trying to get more scoop from you. Then there are other good folks here who can probably get you on your way. And, no need to send your six daughters after us (yet) Smiling

Re;Wireless connection!

What version of MEPIS are you using?6.0?SimplyMEPIS 32 beta4?3.4.3? All of them will have different answers to your questions. Here is a link some MEPIS wireless info.I don't have wireless yet but there may be an answer for you in one of the links.
http://www.mepis.org/docs/en/index.php/Wireless_connection
This second link is to some command lines that will help you too.
http://www.mepis.org/docs/en/index.php/Command_line_utilities
In the newest MEPIS(simplyMEPIS 32 beta4)there is network assistant. In 6.0 I think you would go to kmenu/system/mepis utilities. When you get there you will know as there will be eth0,wlan0 etc on tabs.It could be as simple as checking a box to enable wlan0 at boot.More than likely you will have to manually put in your encryption id etc.

And try this line in google. You will most likely have your answer.

Don't forget to include all

Don't forget to include all you can about the wireless adapter(s) you are trying to connect with, please. Thanks! Me, I'm humming along now, connecting speedily with a Linksys WPC-54G card.

**I'm as new to linux as they can come, but fed up with
paying Microsoft enough to justify the continued stumbling
as I learn it.
