Mepis rocks...but these boards stink

These boards seem to be really?? buggy.?? I can't save a signature (it only saves half of it)...and they are confusing as well.?? Navigating through them is like trying to walk through a forest with a blindfold on.????According to the boards, there is no difference??between what a project is and what a forum topic is...they're included??on the same page when it comes to recent posts.?? That??absolutely IS NOT organized how it should be.????Projects are NOT forum posts...they are project posts.?? Sure, they can both be in forum format...but not IN the same forum!!?? I mean, I posted twice under projects when all I wanted to do was post in the forum.?? (I was confused??as hell with the way the boards were set up...it took me??2 days of posting just to??figure everything out)?? Had their been a separate board for projects it wouldn't have happened.

Now, perhaps some of you are thinking I'm a??dumb Noob or something.?? I've been posting since 14.4 modems were a new thing...I've been around??since the zmodem and have been posting and using boards and IRC daily since then.?? I assure you??that this opinion is NOT due to me being a Noob.?? ??I guess maybe I'm just used to the threaded BBS style.?? Oh well...Anyone else finding the boards to be buggy and confusing??? Since MEPIS is geared toward GUI linux I wouldI mean, I don't get to see full titltes of posts either...for some reason they are cut off (not a browser problem...it's the same here as it is at work).?? The categories are strung out when they could be clear and concise and more organized.?? I mean,?? I like my boards like I like my file structure...ya know??? I feel like I should e2fsck the boards.

I absolutely adore MEPIS and think it is the best Distro I've ever used...but I despise the user compatibility of the forum boards.?? I'll be hanging out at other MEPIS forums and doing my best to spread the word there until the board style and layout changes.?? I hope others don't find the board layout and ability to be the same as I do cause they will be heading away fast.

> Anyone else finding the boards to be buggy and confusing?

--Yep. I've always thought the forum layout was goofy and had way too many categories. Relied on the Digest email until that module broke and they forced me to use Subscriptions. The Subscription emails give NO helpful info regarding what the post is about; you have to click the link to see what's going on. Drupal is the culprit here - that's the forum software they're using for Mepis.

--I recommended they switch to something else, (like Yabb for instance) months ago; but they chose to stay with Drupal. (shrug) The Digest was the best means available at the time to help large numbers of people with little effort. Since that went away, that's why I haven't been posting as much.

I agree Drupal sux!

I find the layout quite unusual and difficult and I dont really like it much.
However, I must admit that I prefer yabb myself.

Also, with regards to forum software, although YaBB isnt the fastest, it is free
(whereas UBB and VBulletin both cost), But the newer versions of YaBB are reasonably fast in comparison.??

Forum

I find that the postings get into odd categories. I have been tempted to move postings to other categories but so far I haven't.
Would it help if the postings went into more logical categories (which is always my definition of the right category??)
The cut off headers aren't cut off at all.
They are the result of persons who don't write a header - the first X characters of their posting is used as the header.

Drupal

In time Drupal will improve. As more people get on board new modules will be created and the current modules will be improved. The taxonomy of Drupal can cause confusion, but I am??sure this will change soon.Considering time constraints of many who are here I think things look great and keep looking better as time goes along. Warren has done a great job with Drupal in making it do the job for this site. One thing to think about is if you want Drupal improved, download it, play with it, review the modules, then create your own or??fix the ones that are causing problems.????

The other thing to remember

The other thing to remember is the drupal is powering the entire site, not just the forum. So it's not just going and adding a drop-in replacement board. I'm sure that Warren is taking everything under advisement though.

I get some strange errors u

I get some strange errors using this forum and firefox.?? I can't copy or paste because of "security reasons" and when I post my subject lines are sometimes messed up and I get booted to another part of the forum, not the place where I just posted to...strange things...

double posting

might this be the reason why some people end up double posting?
i removed a few doubles this week, and they are increasing.
is it a forum / user problem or a forum / firefox /use problem?
anyone who needs to answer privately may do so....
liz

that would make sense

I have almost double posted several times (or did I and then you fixed it!) so that kind of bug could explain the increase.?? Or another reason:?? more n00bs are registering Smiling

privacy

privacy rules prevent me from revealing whose double posts i've removed.
(translated : i've forgotten)
if it because we've got noobs, then that is fine.
i'll quietly remove double posts, although i haven't perfected merging streams of consciousness yet.

** fix for the mozilla copy/paste problem!

heheh. I guess I was wrong about the browser, because of the apt-get problems I kicked back to testing and am now using firebird 0.7-7. I found a fix for the copy paste problem, I'm gonna give it a whirl to see if it works...it has something to do with the "rich text editing" security something or another...

This is for copy paste problems in these forums for mozilla firebird:
This is what I did...

1) close all mozilla windows and make sure the program isn't running on another virtual desktop, etc.
2) in the user's home directory there'll be a file called prefs.js in the /home/[your user name]/.phoenix/default/[random number]/ directory.
3) load the file into your favorite editor and copy/paste the following at the bottom:

user_pref("capability.policy.policynames", "allowclipboard");
user_pref("capability.policy.allowclipboard.sites", "http://www.mepis.org");
user_pref("capability.policy.allowclipboard.Clipboard.cutcopy", "allAccess");
user_pref("capability.policy.allowclipboard.Clipboard.paste", "allAccess");

4) save and exit. Restart firebird and you should have copy/paste functions on this forum Smiling

I found that

I found that the bug where I get booted to a different part of the forum occurs if I'm posting when I have more than one window open, even if it's tabbed. :|

you're right

yes, this board isn't very good.
I can't copy into the "comment" field when I write a new message (Mozilla Firefox) and all in all there many better ones in the web. (wbb, vbulletin, phpbb2, invision...)
but it works and that's the most important thing.

re:CAP

the fix for your problem is two posts above yours.

foo

better...

it's better now, but I have still the opinion that it would be better to use another board Eye-wink

I

I concur
