Upgrading
Upgrading

Upgrading mepis is not necessary.
You can use it as is if it does everything you need. If you have problems with hardware that doesn't work you may benefit from upgrading.
In particular, DO NOT use apt-get upgrade on your new mepis installation.
When you have more experience, then read the forums and consider if you should use apt-get upgrade.

Recomendation for sources.list
Dr LIZ (all the way down under),
Would you recommend commenting out everything in sources.list except the mepis, security, and java sources?
:-)~MIKE~(-:
No
I have installed lots of packages that are really important, like fortune, ogle, mp3kult, ddj, grip
and for those the other sources are needed.
I think that most of mine comes from au.debian actually.
Yes
If you are going to be tempted to updgrade everything in sight, cut down the list which is available.

hey now....
Some of us users are not spring chickens
49 here! I've been using mepis as my sole OS on my laptop since Nov 03, and have had it dual booted with some form of linux/windows since 2000. Don't let the haircut fool you, Some of us old fogies are Linux medium-power users

spring chickens & old fogies? :-)
I on the other hand am a spring chicken
I'm only 54. Have been using GNU/Linux since early 2000 and Mepis specifically?? from the beginning of the year (My first computer was a TRS80 back in 84) I've checked out many, many distros (for fun and education) but mainly used - in this order - Mandrake, Knoppix and now Mepis. I've setup an elderly couple (70s) who had never used a computer. It is an old computer running Libranet Linux with Internet access. They use it without any difficulty and I am secure in the knowledge that they are safer from viruses and themselves.
I have never had a problem
with upgrading any version of Mepis except for 2003.10. With later versions, there was a bad pciutils package that was in the debian repositories but that was not a fatal problem and is no longer a problem anymore, thanks to rc2.
Upgrading is not a weakness of Mepis. To say it is, you must not have that much experience with using the different versions of Mepis or even with the rc2, if you are even using it.
I say this because I have lots of experience with using apt-get upgrade. I upgrade everyday with Mepis, and I've changed my sources.list in the past but not with the last few rc releases.
Thanks for the links..
??Thanks for the links, very helpful.
I am not a complete idiot!
Some of the parts are on backorder....
