Updating

Updating is advisable, especially for security fixes.
Choose just the security repositories if you have a slow connection and then you will be able to choose a list of packages which are available for upgrade.
Choose carefully, it is not advisable to upgrade everything. If additional packages will need upgrading, apt-get will advise you.

I know that this needs more work; I just started for completeness compared to upgrading
