Can 64mb RAM really work?
I have been searching the forum about this but haven't seen anything that is working for me. I have a??PII 300 64mb RAM machine that I would like to install MEPIS on.??I have my partitions set up. I have a 3.9gig ext3 and a 200mb swap.
It takes a long time to get the??CD spun up and then I can never get past 1% on the install. Sometimes the installer will just kick me back to the login screen.
I know that MEPIS needs at least 100mb of RAM so is there a way to initialize the swap at the boot of the live CD to speed the load process and possibly help with the install process? ??
Thanks

A II should take PC100 ram, you can get it dirt cheap from any shop that deals in used equipment.?? I picked up a stick for .25 a meg, 16 bucks for 256meg.

I will give the swapon command a try this evening.
LinuxMWB - As for the memory, I guess I should have given more detail. ![]()
I received a bunch (around 150-170!) of donated computers for my not for profit organization. I refurbish PC's and donate them to needy children. I have about 40-50 of these PII 300's so I thought I would give MEPIS a try. I have some memory around but not enough to cover all these machines!! MEPIS has worked great for me at home so I thought I would spread the word through elementary school kids!!
I am really hoping that with a swap partition I can get MEPIS to run OK. I'm not real high on any other distros. I tried installing SuSE but the install dies on me also.
Thanks

Give me a private message with a contact email.?? I work for a computer building company, and I am sure we have so RAM laying around that can be donated.??

That being the case, maybe you can get someone to contribute the memory. It is a tax writeoff

Nothing to do with your installation problem, but if it's for young children you might want to take a look at gcompris. (Available via apt-get)

Yes..gcompris is a very cool app. It will definitely be part of the install??when I can get these machines going.

64 mb works on my machine at home. 8 mb of that is even??reserved for video. The only way it would work is turning on a big (512 mb) swap file for MEPIS to play with, but it does work. Swapon is what I used.
Of course, the RAM upgrade's arriving today, along with a new printer, new modem (this is from work) and a reinstall of MEPIS for some newbie mistakes, but heh! live and learn. I love the software and the system!

Boot up normally then use the swapon command to make use of a swap partition. eg. swapon /dev/hda3. I don't know if this will solve your problem or not, but it's probably worth a try.
