Printer Problems
Posts: 19
I set up my printer (Epson Stylus CX5400) using the kde wizard and everything looks fine but when I print a test page nothing happens. I double checked things at localhost:631 and it reported this error:
Unable to open USB device "usb: /dev/usb/usb/lp0": no such device
I had this printer working fine in Knoppix as well as Lindows. I've had problems with a different printer before that Mepis wouldn't recognize but Knoppix would. Hmmm. . Any suggestions?
Thanks for your help,
Matt

You know, it's interesting your observation to me, 'cause I also use a printer made by Epson, althought it's another model & mine has been working ( note that I don't say "well", 'cause it's an old cranky guy, that probably it's claiming to be retired, but I never listen & keep on using it
)

First download the latest drivers (print & scan) from the epson/kowa site here:
http://www.epkowa.co.jp/english/linux_e/dl_spc.html
Just use alien to convert the rpm's to deb... should work fine
Detail instructions on getting the scanner to work (files to edit, etc)are here:

also install xsane
I know it's a pita, but when you get it working it's worth it.

Well, it seems that all of my problems were coming from the printer! My girlfriend was in windows and she said that the printer wasn't working. Right then I got excited. I ran over fiddled with the usb cables and then turned the printer on and off. It was printing again. I quickly booted into Mepis and resetup the printer and ZING! It worked and so did?? the scanner!! Wooo! I never had a scanner working in Linux. Only a few more hardware issues to resolve. Mepis is now the most working linux distro I have ever used. Thanks all for you help.??

Printer problems...

When I first installed MEPIS my HP PSC1210 All-In-One worked great and has been working great for the last two weeks or so.?? All of a sudden it stopped receiving jobs and it seems that nothing I can think to do will fix it.?? I've un-installed and re-installed, restarted the print server, rebooted, etc.?? When I print a file the job shows up in the print queue and any subsequent jobs pile up, but nothing ever actually prints (including printing a test page).?? I'm running a dual boot with WinXP and printer works fine from there, so it isn't the printer or a cable problem... worst part is, I'm new to Linux so I'm kinda at a loss for what to do next.?? Any help would be great.
Thanks,

Thanks alextong!?? That worked great.?? I have absolutely no idea why that worked.. but it worked.?? The funny thing is that my printer was working great with whatever driver it had before (I had printed over 200 pages) for 2 whole weeks before it stopped working... but what the heck, I'm up and running now and I can stop logging into Windows every time I wanna print something.
Thanks again.

I'll just toss-in an observation for those who may be in the market for a printer in the near future...
Bar-none, HP has the best support for Linux printing, and should be the first vendor you support with your purchase dollars.

That's nothing. If you play it forwards, it installs Windows!

?? It certainly works to re-install the printer, but it seems to work fine for a while and then just stop working out of the blue.... not sure why that is, but I'm gonna try it again... I'll post again if it stops working again.?? Thanks again for your suggestions.

Check firewall setting

If you have ruled out hardware and permission related issues, then you may want to check your firewall settings. cups listens on port 631 which appears to be blocked by default by Guarddog (K->system->security->Guarddog) firewall rules.
I recently did a default install SimplyMEPIS 3.3 on my friend's computer. He had a Epson Stylus C43UX. Everything went smooth except the test page wouldnt come out of the printer! After a few hours of reinstall and poking around, I finally disabled the firewall. The page came out perfectly.
Disabling firewall is a pretty drastic step. In this particular case, it was on a protected LAN. Perhaps someone could post instructions on how to modify firewall rules (pretty arcane stuff) to allow local processes to connect to tcp/631.

I manually added all users to the allowed users list but the printer still doesn't respond. Thanks for the suggestion though!
