Mepis - SATA Install

I just wanted to post up my sucsess with installing Mepis 2004.03 Here is my system configuration:

Asus A7N8X-Deluxe
ATI Rage 128 Pro (32mb)
WD Raptor 36GB Drive (sata-boot)
WD 7200 Rpm 80gb 8mb cache (ata, 2 drives)
2*256 Corsair XMS256-3200c2

SATA Drive Partition Table

sde1 - NTFS windows partition
sde2 - / partition
sde3 - extended partition
sde5 - /swap partition in??extended partition
sde6 - /home partition in extended partition

I had to unplug the ATA drives and setup the partioning like this otherwise I couldn't get it to boot. Whenever the root partition was in the extended partition it wouldn't boot (weird, but I couldn't figure that one out). I kept getting errors that the partition was unavailable. Needless to say once I figured out that I needed to set the partitions up in this order things worked pretty well.

Once I got windows installed I was able to install Mepis. Then, when everything was working well I was able to plug the ATA drives back in. Windows did it's thing and found them fine and Mepis showed them in the mount paritions utility on the desktop. I am able to mount my NTFS partitions and it all seams to work pretty well.

Now the next exciting thing is when I get my new video card this week. I'll need to figure out what to do Mepis wise when I pull the old card and install the new one. Smiling When I'm sure it'll all work I'll register and send in my donation Laughing out loud

Thanks for the useful postings here on the message boards - Nick.

swap partition

Hi there, just exactly how much space that you allocate for each of your partition mentioned above? Because i'm having trouble of figuring out ways to partition my hard disk.

It varies

Depending on the size of your drive things change. However, ms dos has trouble recognizing too many primary partitions. Here's my breakdown on a 36gb WD Raptor:

hde1 15gb primary partition
hde2 3500mb / - root - primary partition
hde3 - 11gb extended partition
hde5 - 1024mb /swap (2x system ram)
hde6 - 10gb /home

hde5 and hde6 reside in the extended partition. I found that I was unable to boot when the root partition was no a primary partition. The size may not add up exactly but it's close. I hope this helps.
