Upgrade, Update, and Application Install Problem in Kpackage

I'm having a problem with tar stopping whenever I want to Update, Upgrade, and install any packages. This is what I see in Kpackage when I attempt an install of Netscape 4.77.
Everything stops at: "Setting up tar (1.13.25-6) ..."

When I hit -c it finishes up as at the bottom of this copy....

How can I get past this?

David

Installing Old Netscape

I installed the netscape package and it worked fine.

I see your install picked up nscache and ldso which did not happen when I installed netscape. I don't understand why your install did that.

If you're having trouble in general with installing more packages, you might want to verify that your partition isn't full.

Ok I answered...

the earlier question. I didn't notice it before. And now I'm amazed to find that Netscape 4.77 from 1998 is still around, but it should work--and does work for me.

No, no, no

You Misunderstand. I replied because your message alerted me that this unanswered message existed.

Thanks for doing that.

Who's mad?

I'm not sure who you are aiming your message at, but I'm very interested in the error message "Moving /usr/info/dir to /usr/share/info/dir."

This was reported at least once before, yet thousands of other people have not has this problem. Surely there's something unusual about your configuration.

Have you verified that your root partition is not full? If you installed on a small hard drive, it could be full.

And what version of MEPIS are you running?

Good root Size

Hi David,

A good root size depends on how much you want to add to the base system. 2.5 GB is about the minimum that will work. 4 GB should be ample for most users. As a developer, I need 6-8GB. Bear in mind that you can recover space by deleting the system logs and the apt package cache. This is easily done via the MCC, or you can do it manually.

Who's mad?

Warren,
I had the same problem. It appears that the directories /usr/share/info/dir & /usr/info/dir must have the same contents in them.

However, when I did a Dist Upgrade to bring all packages up to date this problem occurred. I had been updating fine, (no Problem) up until this time. I think something in the upgrade wiped out the contents of /usr/info/dir for what ever reason? Who knows?

The fix is to copy the contents of /usr/share/info/dir to /usr/info/dir as pointed out by an earlier post from sekhmet in the general forum.

However, I was not able to do it. Thinking now that I might not have been logged in as root while logged into my Mepis HD install. Sooo, I had to use the live CD.

I used my live MEPIS CD and logged in as root.
Mounted and cd'ed to the proper HD location in the file structure
I issued the following command:
cp /usr/share/info/dir /usr/info/dir
It worked!
Anyways, after doing that I brought the Mepis HD install on my computer back up and logged in. Once logged in, I issued the apt update & upgrade commands. The first thing the performed was a symlink between the /usr/share/info to /usr/info/dir directories.

Since then the Mepis HD install has worked fine.
Don't know if this helps?

Thanks for a great distro,
paul

Upgrading Weirdness

Hi Paul,

Thanks for the extra info. That is so strange. I have never seen that happen. I wonde rif it's because I upgrade often. Did you do a massive upgrade all at once?

Upgrading Weirdness

Warren,
Yes & No.

No! I had been upgrading packages I liked along the (XMMS, OO, etc.)way.

However, as time went by there were more and more updates submitted.

Yes!
When the problem came about, I actually did a massive upgrade all at once.

Thanks,
paul

Problem Recreated ... Is this the dkpkg problem?

(I am reposting so this message can be found and I actually have a proper Subject....) Smiling

Things seemed to work until after using Upgrade which ended this way. Now I'm having the dpkg problem again....

Thoughts?

/usr/info v. /usr/share/info

I'm getting confused. And I think your system is confused at this point as well. I'm sure there's a solution.

What version of MEPIS did you install?

Since the install, did you move /usr/info to /usr/share/info manually?

RE: /usr/info v. /usr/share/info

I'm using MEPIS Linux 2003.08.01. I have not moved anything manually... I have reinstalled the OS again and am running fine, being able to run Update OK but I'm leery of the upgrade process since I've had the dpkg problem three times now... each after the Upgrade process.

I have used Synaptic a couple of times and may see what it's functionality would be in the scenario....

David

RE: /usr/info v. /usr/share/info

David,
Synaptic is what i used when i expienced the same problem. I think (and could be wrong) that it may be a problem with Mepis 2003.08. After I fixed the problem and ran just the apt-get update the problem has not reoccured.

paul

/etc/info problem

It's a problem with updating to a change in dpkg. The directory has been moved and a link is made from the old location to the new location. Once dpkg and the reloction are in sync with each other, upgrade should work again. Most people did not have this problem.

So, it's my theory that if you get completely up-to-date and if /etc/info is a link to /etc/share/info that then upgrade should work again. But it's possible that the sequence in which you update could have an affect on the results.

This is one of those weird things that happens from time to time in the Debian pool when a dependency is overlooked.

Hi Paul, That's now where

Hi Paul,
That's now where I think I am... Just no Upgrades... Smiling

David

Thanks Warren

I think you are right... The problem ends similarly in Synaptic, of course after trying to move /usr/info/dir into /usr/share/info/dir. Will we see the same in 2003.10?

Regards,

David

One Time Problems

If that was the cause, it should only once in the history of the universe, unless the maintainer of dpkg decides to move the directory again and gets the dependencies wrong again.

One Time Problems

Warren,
(Ha Ha) Lets hope not. For those of us that have had this problem, we at least know what the fix it. If you follow the procedures listes elsewhere in the forum the fix is easy. And the beauty is you do not have to blow away you installation. I hate it when I have to do a freash install. (LOL)
Thnaks guys for all your help. Regardless of this problem, I enjoy this distribution more and more.
