"Fixing" the KDE menu appearance
Hello, Mepis!
I did not know where to put this question, so I'll post it here... moderators, feel free to move it to it's "correct" location if necessary.
The question: I'm trying to configure Mepis' KDE to look the way *I* want it to... specifically, I'm trying to turn off that 90% translucent effect on the menus.
Some people may love it, I don't. However, the settings found in the Control Center do NOT change the look of the menu! That blasted thing is STILL translucent! And for some reason, the little drop-shadow that I prefer (setting is in the same place as the translucent menu) does NOT work.
To recap: what I WANT - no translucency; yes drop shadow
What I currently HAVE - yes translucency; no drop shadow
Any help, anyone? Please tell me what I need to do to get my solid menu? Thank you for any help you can provide.

transparent menu
Control Center/ Appearance & Themes/Style/Effects then you may have to change the opacity and the menu effect. It is also possible that the style may have to be changed also. Reboot. Check what you have. If things (I'll be back and after I personally try this with a report) are right with the menu transparency and you've changed the style, change it back (the style) and reboot. It should stay with the menu opacity set if it's available with the style you've set. I use ceramik but have never tried to do this, but the option is there. Back in a couple of hours as I have some business to do at present.
.....back early. you don't have to reboot or change the style. have fun!
 PS the menu drop shadow is right there also, as a check box
a current state of mind
I know it's THERE... but it doesn't WORK.
Instead of retyping in my entire first post, where I clearly state that I know where the settings ARE but that they don't WORK... I took a screenshot to SHOW you that they're not working.

Does THAT explain what I'm talking about more clearly? The settings DO NOT WORK.
My question - again - is how do I fix them so that they DO work?

that's not it, either.
I've restarted KDE numerous times. That doesn't fix the problem. In fact, when I've rebooted, I've noticed that the settings that I've made (for example, lining up icons on my desktop) have NOT been saved.
So, my *guess* is that something that's supposed to be written ISN'T getting written in the .kde folder. But I'm at a loss as to what that might be.
And here's an update (this is an edited addition)... the problem ONLY exists AS ROOT. Everything works just as it's supposed to work when logged in as a user... Don't ask me why.

menu problem
By any chance have you simply disabled GUI effects? It looks like that is still enabled from your screenshot. Only thing I can think of that's left to try since I'm not a guru with the command line.
Sorry, it's late but I think you might try to set the opacity level to 100% first. I just did that to my install and that will remove the transparancy of the menus and not do anything else. Sorry to take so long to figure it out, but this old sinner had some things on his mind that weren't connected. Probably a low seratonin uptake level.

Styles and Effects
doesn't appear in my hotch-potch system - partially upgraded from 2003.10.
Does appear on my b04 system, and disable effects works there.
I didn't find any way to set the opacity to 100% as a trial though.

Style Menu - Effects
Menu Opacity
The slider bar at the end of right side column. Put opacity at 100% and use software tint if you don't want transparent kmenu.
c'mon guys....
Never mind.
It doesn't work in root, but it DOES work fine as a user, and I'm logged in as user 99% of the time. So the point is moot.
It's just frustrating that it does NOT work as root. And it's even MORE frustrating that I don't know WHY...
Thanks for your replies, everyone! Blessings!

Sorry PastorEd
I've never tried to really do much with the look of the desktop as root. I'm always the user and I have never even booted in as root but one time since my most recent upgrade of Mepis. So you are most likely right and you can't change the menu opacity as root.
Did you try...
clicking on style from Appearance and Themes section of Control Center, then click on effects tab and where is says menu effect pick the animate option from the drop down menu?
How long ago
have you done an apt-get upgrade? That may fix your menu problem. Or you can use kmenu editor and move some of your menu items into subfolders to get them off the main menu you see when you click on the kmenu icon.
hi, that same menu thing hap
hi,
that same menu thing happened to me after an update of something.
fixed it by going ->start->settings->control center->appearance & themes->fonts and setting menu fonts to arial 10 point.
hope it helps.
