Supplemental VS Duplication of effort

Your site is a supplement to this site covering issues not necessarly covered in direct support. TKS's is, IMO, a duplication of effort and trys to handle issues better covered in the official Mepis forum.

CBlue,
I don't have a problem with those who set up a site to "spread the word" about Mepis. It's just those who (intended or not) take resources (eg. members who know stuff) away from this forum. This is the official forum and should be where questions are asked and answered.
I've been at other distro forums where someone thinks their forum should be 'The One" and in about every thread they put "That's a great tip. You should go to *myforum/site* and post it there."
Excuse me, but that's spamming and it's unethical. (and, obnoxious)
Also, what happens if the wind blows and Mr. NewForum decides that distro X is now his new favorite or maybe that he just doesn't want to play this game any more? How many times have we seen that happen?
I think we can be sure that this forum will be here as long as Mepis and that Warren will remain true to it.

If people don't want a particular forum, it won't get visitors and posts. If people want it, it will be used.
I won't have time to visit all these fora; I will still be here.

No one is taking users that help here away. As a matter of fact, most of the people that post on my site are avid posters here and do their best here to help people. So what you said in your post has nothing to do with the support sites for Mepis and does not apply to me or people that are part of my site's community. We know to help out here, that's part of supporting Mepis.

Why another forum??? Exposure

Why another forum??? EXPOSURE!!!!
The more sites...the better.?? If one of our forums gets popular..they're all linked together and every single one INCLUDING THIS ONE becomes more popular.?? Think about things before you ask...the more we get the word out on MEPIS the better off it will be.?? Most people don't even know about it and I put up a forum to change that.
As far as my site being a duplication...then it will join all of the other forums out there.?? Check the slackware forum at LinuxQuestions.org...then check the Slackware forum at userlocal.com...then check the slackware forum at LinuxISO.org...each one of these supports Slackware...are any better??? Personal opinions differ.?? But the simple fact of the matter is that each one of these sites all support Slackware Linux.?? Now...find out how many support MEPIS.?? This one.?? Now mine does (sort of...still too early to help too much).
Let's say though that one day someone is installing MEPIS and they run across some problems.?? They try and go to MEPIS.org and the site is down.?? They normally would have to wait until the site came back up...and people hate waiting.?? So they may just decide to scrap the whole MEPIS idea right??? What if there was another forum that might be able to help them?????? Remember that everyone that goes to these sites and supports them are MEPIS enthusiasts and only want to help things be better...not to demean or take away from the creators own forum/site.
I agree that the forums here are a better source of information...but I'm not going to take my forum down just because it's not as popular.?? On the contrary, I'm going to continue to post at both here and there.?? (I'm more comfortable with the layout of my forum as opposed to this one...it's only a personal preference...once again it doesn't mean i will stop coming here).?? I'll continue to do as much to advance MEPIS in general, MEPISLovers.com, and mepisforum.sytes.net
If people see 3 professional sites dedicated to MEPIS...they might be more apt to believe that it's not such a 'small distro' afterall...which is something I keep hearing at forums around the net.?? Both you and I know that MEPIS IS a major player and needs to be recognized as such...but it won't be if we bicker amongst ourselves instead of advancing the MEPIS cause.?? This is all I have to say about this.?? I've already made this post too long...if you wish to continue this conversation...don't hesitate to PM me or email me at tks@tksbox.net

TKS

?? FYI,
If there isn't something I can handle (as a linux user since 1994) then I refer them to MEPIS.org's forums to get help from the source.?? My forum is not here to replace anything...only to provide a more familiar layout and a sense of community that a distro needs to survive.
Cheers,

I thought I would add that I support multiple forums for a couple of reasons. One is that just like Linux itself, with forums there are a lot of varying tastes out there. Some people prefer certain package managers, certain window managers, and certain forum managers. I for one prefer forums based on phpBB, mostly for aesthetic and organizational reasons. Another forum can't hurt. As someone above mentioned, if people like it, it'll become popular, and the more the merrier. If people don't, it won't. No harm no foul.

I agree with Lamont. It's all well & good to prefer one format (package manager etc.) over another. But the purpose of a support forum is information about a subject. Fragmenting that info just makes it harder for folks to find what they need when they have a problem.
It's hard enough to find info about a obscure problem on ONE forum. Needing to search 5 or 6?? before finding the info is gonna send me running to another distro ( or back to MS, if this were my first attempt at Linux).
As an example, even though this is supposed to be the "official" site for Mepis, I just found a more extensive discussion on getting an ADMTek 8211 based wireless card working on the Mepislovers forum than I did here, even though the original poster posted the same messege in both forums. While I'm glad to get the additional info, it took me over a week to "find" it, & I stumbled on it in an idle look around that forum, having given up on getting the card to work in Mepis.from the info poseted here.
Many windoze folks would have deleted Mepis & gone back to the dark side in that amount of time, so you can't tell me that fragmenting info accross several forums is good for Mepis, Information needs to be easily found in a central location for a distro to gain ground.

Dave

Obviously you aren't really reading about these new forums and sites for Mepis. Mine, at least, (probably TKS's too) were created to
1) spread the word of Mepis
2) provide more links for Mepis in search engines
3) give Mepis users a place to create a community to support each other
4) This site, mepis.org, is the official support site, not a place where users can really get to know each other better and talk about things that shouldn't really be on this site.
If you don't like visiting Mepis sites, except this one, then that is fine for you. But my membership grows daily and I have alot of visitors daily because of how I've advertised my site, that I'm hopely drawing more users to Mepis.
*Just to add, I'm not a webmaster of TKS's site that is talked about by him. My Mepis support site is in another topic in this category. But I'm a supporter of TKS's site too.
