PC Card (PCMCIA) network adapter not working
Posts: 17
Downloaded 2004.05.beta.0528.en-fr today, burned it, and installed it over an older beta on an IBM Thinkpad T22. Grub installation was extremely slow, but after waiting for everything to complete and fixing the odd problem that might have been due to my incompetence, I tried inserting a D-Link PC Card wireless network adapter. I can't get the system to recognize it. I tried inserting a different PC Card adapter, with the same result, so I don't think it's the adapter hardware.
Mind you, this is an improvement over the previous beta, where removing a PC Card adapter would cause a kernel panic, but ... Anybody have any ideas?
I hope for both of you

that someone who has the same hardware and has the solution you need will see this post and help you. Has this hardware been recognized and configured right for you in another distro you've tried? Do you know the module/driver name for this card?
If it worked fine in another distro then maybe it will in Mepis. If it never worked fine in another distro, then try searching for your answer in linuxquestions.org. They have a larger resource of members that may know how to set up this hardware in Linux.
Thanks

I appreciate your help CBlue. Mepis 2003.10 recognizes the card perfectly. It also works using Fedora Core 1. I can't check the exact name of the module right now (I'm booted in Windows at the moment) but I remember it was something like Prism 2.5 maybe (I'm a Linux noobie, can you tell?). Is there a way to log the boot sequence running the live cd of Mepis 2004.5.031? I could post it here for everyone to see the error message. From what I can remember from the boot screens, it pauses a while at a certain point and then says it "can't apply power to eth0."
PC Card (PCMCIA) network adapter not working

Here's a twist on the problem I posted a couple of weeks ago. The network adapter itself is working. KWifiManager can see the access point, which is a DHCP server, and shows a strong connection. However, nothing assigns the adapter an IP address when I insert it. I've tried a number of approaches to try to get this to work, without success. Can anyone suggest something more fruitful?

but it may be one of those problems where you need the correct ascii string .
Look through the networking list.

Thinkpad 600E pcmcia nic

Just tried Mepis-2004.05.en-fr.cd1 on my Thinkpad 600E and encountered the same problem in both the 2.4 and 2.6 kernels. The pcmcia card is recognized as being a Linksys Etherfast 10/100 and powered up, and the system then does a modprobe for pcnet_cs.o which does not exist in the system.
Anybody know if the card drivers, pcnet_cs.o in my case, for these things are available in later betas?

I had a similar experience on my older ThinkPad A22m. In my case, I had the card inserted from the beginning of the boot process and Mepis did not even apply power to the card. 2003.10 worked fine with my D-link card. I posted this issue yesterday but no one has responded. Sorry I can't be more help.
