How stable is beta 5?
Hi, I'm curious about the stability and hardware compatibility of Mepis b5. I really want to try it, and I also have a computer with no OS that needs one. Is b5 free of X server crashes yet, and is the KDE environment reasonably stable? I just want to make sure before using my bandwidth. Thanks for the help!

That's good to hear! Then is it at least at good as 2003.10? Is it just hardware detection that is still being worked out?
I would use 2003.10, but that version's X server crashed relatively frequently on my computer, and now that I've used KDE 3.2, there's no going back to 3.1.x.
Thanks for replying!

Ooops, sorry, should have mentioned that. It's an old AMD K-6II system w/ 128MB of RAM, and lovely
8MB cmi8330 onboard video, and nothing else exceptional. The 2.6 kernel on Mandrake 10.0 CE did work well, but Mandrake also suffered from X server crashes. At least I'm assuming they're X crashes, but I suppose they could be KDE crashes? I'll just be browsing the web or moving the mouse, basically doing nothing, when the monitor clicks and then X and KDE restart. Although the kernel never crashes, for a desktop distro, X-crashes are almost as bad- you lose everything in all the GUI applications. I shouldn't say X crashes were frequent, but for a while it seemed MEPIS 2003.10 would crash almost every day. (I boot up my computer for a few hours almost every night, then turn it off again.) I'm currently using SLAX (hard drive installed) which is by far the most stable OS I've ever used, but too stripped down for my liking. Thanks for your help!!
