Mepis does funny things with my monitor
I've just installed the latest beta4 and have used 2003.10.02 in the past.
Both have given me a strange screen, where I have a black stripe of 1 cm on the left and 2 cm on the right. NO OTHER DISTRO DOES THIS! I can change it a bit with xvidtune, but I'm not 100% pleased with the result. I've used Peanut, Lindows 4.5 , Suse 8.2, Mandrake 8.0, 9.1,10.0, Onebase, Windows 98/XP and recently Munjoy (another Debian-distro) but NEVER had this problem. (I've used some of these after 2003.10 and before the latest Beta4
Perhaps someone can tell me what Warren does different compared to other distro's, because I don't like it. I use a Nvidia Gforce Ti4200 128Mb card and an Adi 17" monitor @1024x768, so not exactly an objscure card imo, but the screen isn't the was it should be!
Any suggestions?
Thanks!
Marcel

What do you mean black stripe?
I have black around my entire screen and it's that way in every operating system I've ever used. It's the resolution that I have my monitor set at. I can resize my desktop screen to fill up the whole screen if I wish but I don't wish.
Is this black stripe you are talking about just the background of your screen behind your desktop? If so, you can adjust this if you have controls on your monitor.
I dual boot
so therefore I cannot adjust the monitor. I have black around my screen too using Mepis, but the difference compared to other distro's and windows is so huge I cannot adjust it because I would have to do so everytime I reboot. I'm just curious why this difference is there because??no distro I've just has given me this problem (and there were many!
Please do not adjust your set
Well, you're probably too young, but it was a really old saying on TV.
Anyway. Adjust your set for Mepis; funnily enough it may still be fine under another OS. I have had this happen before - probably about SuSE 7.3 I think.

Why only using mepis?
I only have this with mepis releases 2003.10.02 and b04 and I'm curious why this happens! I have used xvidtune to correct the problem as I like Mepis!
possibly
you are at the limit of the monitor as far as horizontal and vertical frequency go. Mepis *may* be preset at a higher refresh rate - better on your eyes, but you can't push the monitor resolution as far.
Someone may know better, and if so, they're bound to share it here.

black stripe
I had the same problem with Mepis. Since it has taken me for it's own I've just adjusted my monitor to fill the screen. Usually the monitor will have size adjustments for horizontal and vertical size and position can be adjusted also. Since I did this once, and only boot Mepis, I've never had to do it again.
Have a?? great screen now. And I have no idea why this is the case with Mepis.
a current state of mind
Guess it depends on
what kind of monitor you use because I have never had a problem with screen resolution in any OS I've ever used, Linux and Windows. So it must be that some monitors have this problem in Mepis and some do not.
No
No cblue,
my monitor has always been the same.

Monitor settings
will apply and stay saved after reboot with the Simply Mepis rc1. I know because I'm using that version of Mepis and have set my monitor in Mepis System Center and it stays there after reboot.
Also, another thing I have noticed with this version and the beta versions of SimplyMepis rc and with ProMepis beta, is that when you do the install of Mepis to your hard drive from the livecd, if you open up Mepis System Center before you do the install and set your monitor type there, after install and using install X config to root, then you reboot into your new Mepis system on your hard drive, your monitor settings are still there that you set before you installed. So it does work.
please explain
cblue,

Could you explain what you actually did ..........don't understand.

Same here!
I am running SimpleMepis rc1 at this moment, and I have the same problem ExperimentingSOHO??has. On my new LG L1715S LCD Monitor??the image isoff center by approx. a centimeter. I have had this problem on my previous ADI crt monitor too, on all the mepis releases I have used (all since 2003.10.2). Never before have I had this problem on any other distro.
I have a new problem with my new monitor. Before X starts I used to get a gray screen. Now I get a gray screen too, but I have light and dark stripes (vertically, 4 cm wide)?? before it sets ok with the Mepis background. Looks like it is out of sync or something like it. Suggestions?
I will change the offcenter thing with xvidtune again. But it is not a driver issue. I use a nvidia geforce 4 ti 4200 card.
Marcel
Using xvidtune is easy.
The easiest thing to do is become root and open a terminal session.
Just type xvidtune and a graphical program will start. Here you can correct the problem by moving the screen to left-right-up-down or make it bigger or smaller.
When the settings are correct, press the show button. In the terminalsession you will be able to see the new setting.
Copy this??into /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 at the right spot after the keyword "modline" , and place a # before the ones you are replacing. That should do the trick!
Good luck!

Hi Larry!
After I do the install of Mepis to my hard drive in the Mepis Installation Center, before I reboot, I also click on the Install X Config and install it. Doing this, makes sure that the xconfig that I am using during the livecd, gets saved to my installation (hard drive). That way I know that what works in the livecd, will work after I reboot. Like when I do the choosing of my monitor before installing. Before with other versions of Mepis, my monitor settings wouldn't save after reboot or after setting them after installation. But in this new rc1 and some of the latest betas, my monitor settings will save and I don't have to touch them again.
My problems are solved!!!!
I have solved my problems by pressing the auto-adjust-button on my monitor at the moment I had black stripes on?? the screen. It resynced and afterwards I had no black stripes and my screen was fully centered.
I never had this problem before, but now it's solved!
