Annoying sound problem

Like most of the sound cards I've seen, mine has multiple speaker ports. Two, to be exact. My problem? MEPIS uses the wrong one! This wouldn't be a problem, except I dual boot Windows XP(yuck) and MEPIS, so when I switch between the two, I have to climb behind the computer and plug the speakers into the apropriate port. Annoying.
Is there a way to fix this? If so, what is it? If it helps, I'm using an ASUS motherboard's onboard audio. I can't remember exactly which motherboard it is right now, though.

check mixer settings

open something like kmixer and see if you can have output on the other channel.
