a7v8x NO Sound

If not for MEPIS, I wouldn't even be using Linux.
With that said, my sound doesn't work. Is there
a how-to on how to get this done? Please refrain
from geek talk as I am but a newb.
What sounds

If you mean system notifications (e.g. KDE window opening or closing, etc.) then I'm not sure what you need to do: that all worked immediately for me (Mepis 2003.10) -- which is not the case for Knoppix or some other Debian-based distros I've tried (with those I get sys notification sounds only when logged in as root). BTW, I have an on-board sound chip rather than a sound card.
However, if you are not getting sound out of your CDROM when trying to play music CDs, then as given in some older forum posts: look inside your PC and see if there is an audio cable (a thin cable, not a flat data cable) connecting your CDROM to the mother board. Windows apparently does not need this but at least some Linux versions seem to need it. If you don't have one, pick one up at a PC repair shop and install it. Hope that helps.

Click on kmenu then settings then Control Center
click on Sound and Multimedia then Sound System
click on hardware tab, then click on the select audio device drop down menu and choose Open Sound System, then click apply button
Then click on General tab at the top and look to the bottom where it says test sound, click that and listen for sound.
If you can hear it, then your sound is working. If not, post back here.

Followed your prescription but got no sound. Also tried the CD player with a music CD
in the drive; it read the CD but again no sound. Am running 2004.b05 with
Sound Blaster SBL5-DLSTD-W3-LB. It certainly works with Windows XP.
Any ideas?
I am using an Asus A7V8X now

My Asus A7V8X works just fine. It did in 2003.10 and now does with a recent beta. So I really have no suggestions, I wouldn't know how to troubleshoot an audio problem.
But mine works so I don't understand why yours doesn't. If you dual boot, does sound work in Windows? Audio out connector plugged all the way into the right jack? Check the basics.
