Can't install or run .iso file

I downloaded Mepis and copied it onto two CDs, but when I try to run them, nothing happens. I take it there's supposed to be an icon on my desktop? There isn't. All that's on the CD is a very large .iso file that I can't open.
Yeah, I'm a newbie to Linux, but I'd appreciate any help. I really want to try this out.
Thanks, anyone.

Hi Morgaine,
Can you tell us exactly what happens when you restart with LiveCD in your drive? Do you get the installation screen up?
How did you turn the .iso file into an image? Might be that the CDs not right.

hey im hoping to get a new computer soon and dont know whether to buy a OS or not. So i went to trial MEPIS, however after burning the image to a cd (using nero) i couldnt get anything else to work.
i restarted my computer twice to no prevail, it restarts every time a little slower than usual and comes up on the normal start screan (windows xp) then it says that my firewall is off (which its on) then goes into data execution prevention. it then shuts down windows and leaves me right back at the start. i dont know if i am doing something wrong but it says in the read me that it doesnt work on certain ways the windows xp has been installed.
at the moment i am rather lost so help would be greatly appreciated, thanks slinky

Slinky,
could you give us some more details. Did you install MEPIS or only run it from the CD? Does the CD boot up so that you see the MEPIS boot menu or does Windows XP start no matter what you do?
What kind of machine is it? Did you install XP from CD on it or did you never boot anything from the CD?
Newbie or not Newbie, there's always a question

could we check some basics here
1. burnt as image, not as file
2. burnt at the slowest speed your burner can handle
3. burnt on CD-R, not CD-RW (I know this can work, but sometimes it doesn't)

OK, actually, I figured out that I have to turn the iso file into an image before I burn it. Did that. Now I need to know why the screen goes blank after it tells me it's starting up. (running live cd)
