Does Mepis not like overclocked systems?

Hello fellow Mepis lovers out there!

I'm hoping someone can shed a little light on my situation. I apologize if this is too general a question, but here it goes.

The system involved:

  • PIII 733 overclocked to 1GHz
  • 256MB RAM
  • Elsa Gladiac GTS/Pro2 <something like that>
  • NetGear NIC
  • 52x CD-ROM drive
  • ZIP-100 drive
  • No sound card

It's a pretty generic system. And I'm using the release of Mepis from around the end of last year beginning of this one. I'm sorry I can't remember the version number.

When I boot and run from the CD drive on this system I have no problems. However, after what seems like a successful installation(logged in as both root and demo), I reboot and the system hangs immediately after the LILO screen. I've installed to both the MBR and /root sections. Over the 4 or 5 times I've tried installing, I've had a multitude of messages come up and sometimes I get graphical characters, colored and not always normal alpha-numeric in nature pop up on the monitor immediately after the LILO screen goes away ... and there it hangs. I'm sorry I didn't write them down, the messages that is, to include here.

All the pieces of hardware have been used for over a year now with no problems whatsoever. I can install Windows 2000 on the system with no problems.

Does Mepis or "Linux" in general not like overclocked CPU's??? Is it a kernel thing??? Again, I CAN boot and run from the CD.?? I do a normal installation and create the 3 partitions(root, home, swap) using the QTParted utility.?? I've been using Linux, in general, for almost a year now, but not consistently. So, I am a noob for all intents and purposes.

If there is something I have overlooked to include in my "plea" for help, let me know and I'll try and get the information.?? Thanks for any information you may be able to share with me.

Although you're pushing a bit, I doubt it's that. I run a P4 2.53 at 2.85 currently with a 2.7 kernel and no problems. Others (including Warren) may disagree, but I 'never' set initial partitions with qparted on a dual boot system. PM8 or the W2K/XP utility is best for windows compatibility. Then format the partitions with qparted.

You really might want to try the latest beta on ftp as decent hardware seems to love the 2.6 kernel.

Hey jimf,

Thanks for the suggestion. I may have been unclear with my initial explanation ... I'm not dual booting. I just wanted to mention that I was able to install Win2K, fully and solely, with no problems. So I guess that means it's not a physical drive defect. And as for the CD itself, I have used it to install to another machine and my laptop with no problems either. So, I was just wondering if it might be the CPU config.

Anyway, I'll try the latest beta as you suggested and give that a go ...

Thanks again!
