probs with umlauts!

hi

i've got a problem with umlauts.
i can only type ae, oe, ue and not the right characters!

the problem occurs within all application (also in the console, where the output characters also display strange characters) but not in gaim or evolution!

i'm using german keyboard layout with 105 keys within the kde control center
and in the mepis control center i'm???using:
keyboard: de-latin
character set: de_DE.UTF-8@euro

perhaps you could help me?
