Which Web Cams are support out of the box in SimplyMepis 2004.01?

Hi:
Given the fact that Phillips web cam support for the PWC driver set is no longer available. I would like to know what other web cams available commonly in the United States are supported by Mepis out of the box? Thanks for your attention to this Question.

WebCams

The support in SimplyMepis seems to be better than some other releases but varies from version to version. I have had the Logitech Pro 3000 and the Logitech Quickcam Express working on the most recent versions.
The inexpensive Labtec that I have does not work.

Re: Web Cam support

Thanks for your comments. The logitech Pro 3000 is a Philliphs chip camera that will not work in future, given that the PWC driver has been removed and is no longer supported. I will investeigate the Logitech Quickcam Express as a replacement for my Logitech Pro 4000.

Re: Web Cam support

The 3000 works OK with 2.4.26 kernel and SimpleMepis so called final. Gives a very clear picture with the camstream programme.

I will try it with the 2.6 kernel but I dont normally run that a too many things dont work .... not the least USB Wireless cards.
(I have Netgear MA101B which will not work and the driver sources will not compile.)

Re: Web Cam support

With kernel 2.6 the?? 3000 camera works but gives a small picture. I think this is because pcwx and videodev do not get loaded. Also the computer keyboard does not work in Konsole! The?? microphone in the camera causes the loading of the sound drivers to fail.?? Still, Mepis is the only Linux I have tried where both the logitech Express and Pro 3000 work. As long as (apparently) you dont use the 2.6 kernel.

Re: Web Cam Question

Thank you for your additional comments. I think I may try the Quick Cam Express. When I shift to Mepis. The Philliphs/Logitech Pro 3000, 4000 camera's will slowly stop working as the pwc modules is no longer included in the kernel and it and the pwcx modules have been taken off the internet and are no longer being supported by the developer. I have been dogged in most distro's with the sound breaking due to the web cam microphone. In my currunet distro, after booting to I do a cntl+alt+F1 and then issue the command "service alsa restart" then do a cntl+alt+F7, then log out and log back in. At that point I have full sound. If I remember correctly Knoppix was the only distro that did not have this problem.

Are there any other comments on working web cams?

Thanks for The Link But...

...but samuelmp, have you noticed that you are posting to some very old threads? This link is over two years old. If you have new information on an old topic, it would be better to start a new thread so that new comments could be added to it. I'm sure that webcam info has changed considerably in two years.

Thanks again though for the link to a company that provides these camaras Smiling

Jon
