Internet Connection Down

Although I've not knowingly changed anything, the system doesn't now show etho1 on the status page at System Centre/Network and I can find nowhere to setup or configure hardware and so check that the Realtek card is working. I know it is with Fedora and XP but not Mepis although it has done in the past.

What to do, please?

As I said

No Etho 1 connection shows on the status page and, although I've activated it on the Etho 1 tab it makes no difference. I can't tell if it now recognises the card or not

What Mepis?

What version of Mepis? I seem to remember that earlier versions of Mepis had problems with Realtek.

Mepis 4?

Can't remember the number now but is the last before Simply. Realtek has been fine and the OS worked a few days ago. Now, the etho 1 part on the status tab is greyed out so cannot click start/stop as before. How do I install/check hardware? Other Linux OSs have installer but can't see one on Mepis.
