apt often fails in MEPIS?

Just a quick observation.
When i first installed MEPIS, I boiled it down by removing a lot of apps i didn't need. I have since tried to re-install a number of them via apt. But for some reason, re-installation - even of large and popular aps fails with apt in MEPIS for varying reasons. I haven't tried a debian-based distro where apt fails this much. How come? I just now, removed ARK and tried to re-install it, and it failed because of deps issues. ARK is a fairly popular app...

that the versions of packages you are getting from testing or unstable no longer match with your mepis version.
there are also some recent troubles in the debian pool; for example this happens when kde has a major shift.
