Another Possible Mepis Mirror

A while back, while I was attending community college, I setup a mirror of Mepis and other Linux distributions on one of the CSCI department servers. All went well, but there was one problem...bandwidth. In just a matter of days our bandwidth was fully saturated. Unfortunately administration at
Northeast State Community College forced me to "pull the plug" of the mirror. Where I screwed up from the very beginning was not going through the correct channels before setting up the mirror. If I had done this I would have had better support for the mirror.

Now another opportunity has come my way to setup another mirror site. This will be sponsored by
East Tennessee State University, a campus with plenty of bandwidth. Before I take this opportunity, I am going to offer a proposal to the Computer Science department and to the Office of Information Technology that will give full detail of the plan for the mirror, its advantages for students, and its advantages for the school and the public.

What I am asking of members here is to offer suggestions. I would like people to tell me why an educational institution should mirror Linux. Keep in mind that Mepis will be the first distribution mirrored on the site and will be used as a "test" to see how things work out. This means that Mepis will be the only distribution on the mirror of a while, so I need to convince the higher ups??that Mepis is the version of Linux we should be mirroring. Any and all comments would be helpful. I will not be offering this proposal until fall break sometime after October 16th.??Please feel free to make suggestions, offer opinions, etc.??Thanks in advance.

Great!

Thanks for the replies folks. Keep 'em coming. Does anyone have an opinion on why a school should run a mirror at all? For example, what benefits would a college receive from offering a public mirror?

Seeing is believing!!

Use the most powerful tool of persuasion - empirical evidence. Show the higher ups how you can install Mepis and be up and running in 15-20 minutes by actually installing it in a hands-on demonstration. Seeing is believing!!

Isn't the very function of a college/university to promote the free and open exchange of ideas? With that in mind, wouldn't it then be their moral obligation to spread the work of FOSS, Free and Open Source Software?

An operating system and it's associated software can simply be thought of as an organized collection of these free and open ideas formulated to a serve a specific purpose so it would seem to me to be very much in line with their ideals and their general mission.

mirror

DrKavorkian says it all. It should lead the presentation. If possible the installation in front of the board members or whoever would be a clincher.

a current state of mind

Once again, great information

This is great. Every comment helps. I plan on doing an install of Mepis, but before I can get to that point I must submit a written proposal. The proposal can be looked at as a "sales pitch" where I am trying to convince the "powers-that-be" that a mirror of Linux, mainly Mepis, will be??advantageous in some way to the students of ETSU, the residents of the surrounding area that may be students, and to the faculty and staff of ETSU. I will also need to throw statistics about??things like bandwidth usage, storage space, etc., which is the easy part.

If the proposal works out, then the committee may ask for a presentation. They may also say to go ahead with the mirror. That is why I am taking the time to get suggestions from anyone about the proposal. I want to ensure what I submit is gold. Thanks for all the help, suggestions, etc. and keep the ideas coming.
