Dell Latitude LS- NeoMagic NagicMedia 256AV hangs during install

I'm trying to install SimplyMepis 2004.03 to this laptop.??It seems to work fine when booted on desktop computer, but when I run it on my laptop I get the following during detection of hardware:
All modules loaded.
Running meauto for MEPIS Linux....
?? Finding pci devices....
??Intel Corp. I440BX/ZX/DX?? - 82443BX/ZX/DZ Host Bridge
?? 3Com Corp 3c905C-TX/TX-M [Tornado]
?? Lucent Microelectronics WinMOdem 56k
?? NeoMagic Corp NM2200 [MagicGraph 256AV]
?? NeoMagic Corp NM2200 [MagicGraph 256 AV Audio]
_
Computer locks up at this point and I have to power off to regain control.??
Debian used to have a problem with finding the memory of the sound card taken up by the video memory and had a patch.?? I found this by googling and found some old posts and a patch.?? I don't have a Debian distribution installed or even know how to go about applying this possible patch.?? Anyone know if I'm on the right track with this line of thinking?

I installed Mepis 3.3 some days ago, but get the same problem. About half of the time there's no problem, and the other half it hangs after the Neomagic 256 AV Audio driver sentence.
I see no further repllies.... have you ever found a solution/workaround?

Mepis and NeoMagic

Hi , I have installed Mepis on my desktop and found it terific , easy to install , dekstop exactly what I was looking for , apt-get powered...
So I decided to install it on my old Dell LS400 and got the same problem as described below.
However , I have been able to start Mepis using 'noauto' hardware discovery and then tried to install it on my hard drive but it failed.
It seems the nm256 module used by the kernel got a wrong option activated (I think it is set to '1' instead of '0'....).
Any idea if an inter release Mepis distrib could be published with the fix ?

Thanks,
JSG

Mepis AND NeoMagic , like a charme....

Browsing the net and googling , it seemed the problem could be caused by the Bios . So using the command 'acpi=off' at boot prompt made Mepis loading like a charm on my Dell LS400 .
It is now installing on the hard drive ...
I am a one more Mepis lover Smiling)

I've had the same problem

I've had the same problem with the neomagic chip in my Dell Latitude too. When sound was working it sounded horrible. I'm currently trying adding the acpi=off at boot, so far it seams to be working. But now I don't have any sound at all.
