thank you very much for your help cblue but although i was able to download comical it won't compile without wxwidgets. i tried to get wxwidgets installed from source as there are no .deb packages but it mentioned it couldn't find gtk and quit. I did find a post saying that you have to unzip the comic files and then read it with gqview. until someone makes comical for debian i'll read my comics this way. thnx again

Sorry it wouldn't compile for you.
I have seen on kde-apps.org a program that will allow you to download and read comics from the kde panel. Maybe you can try that out.
it's only for web comic strip

thank you very much for your help but the program only opens .zip comic files. It does not open .cbz and .cbr files which are the main formats used for scanned comics.

Well, from what I can tell, cbz and cbr files are just .rar and .zip files renamed so that CDisplay automatically is associated with them in windows. You can probably just rename the files from .cbz to .zip and .cbr to .rar..
You can read .zip files in showimg easily enough, but as for the rar files, as far as I know, you have to extract them first and then you can look at them. I don't know any open-source image viewer that can read through rar files.. =\ There _is_ ACDsee which will also read through rar and zip files, but it's only for Windows.
You can get a freeware version of rar for linux from the RARlabs website (for extracting rar'ed files):
http://www.rarlab.com/download.htm
It's only command line, but simple enough. =)
yep what you say is true but

yep what you say is true but I have got like 400-500 files and can't go about renaming all of them. Besides lot of them are .cbr files and showimg can't look at rar. Is there any way to run cdisplay from linux? i have heard you can run it using crossover office but you have to pay for that.

You can get crossover trial

Actually I began reading comic books via Mepis
I have tried out numerous ways to do it
and I have given up on almost all of them except
igal -- which can be installed via synaptic
igal creates html files that are indexed
so I can easily view the images just by clicking
to the next one
I also am using it to create thumbnails so that
I can utilize Plucker to convert them so that I
can read them on my Palm T3
Yes I am aware that this does not solve your situation
I use my lightweight notebook to view the images
and I am quite satisfied
-igal- is very fast in creating everything I need
to read them
I would imagine that someone could tinker with it
and create a script so that it would do more...

WxWidgets

go to http://www.billiau.net/coffee_break/drlizau/gnumed.html
and follow notes on getting WxPython running
(done on mepis)

I use it all the time! Just make sure you get and install the free unrar program that was already mentioned to use rar files.
Try this......
