Cannot get internet connection to work

Hi

I have a Toshiba Staellite 1800-712 series, and an Alcatel Speedtouch USB connection. I'm a real newbie at Linux, and not really sure how to get on the net. Mepis seems to recognise that I have an Alcatel USB connection, but I don't know how to get everything to work.

Also, there's no sound. What do I do about that?

Thanks for any help or advice. Please make it step-by-step as I'm not too technical.

Thanks.

could not find it here

I could not find the answer here, so I borrowed a write up from the Linspire Hints, Tips and Tricks forum (I am an Insider) that may help you. Many users in Linspire have succeeded, while some others found it to difficult, hope it helps.

You need make and gcc, then download the Alcatel auto setup file , its a tar
file and you unpack it to your ROOT folder, it will be called
(speedtouchconf-20-03-2004).
now right click on this file and go to
properties / executable and make it is all executable by putting ticks
in the exec boxes and also make sure apply to all is ticked).
OK we have know got the main setup file in the correct place DONT DO ANYTHING WITH IT YET).

go
to the download site at alcatelspeedtouch.com and download the linux
driver (its a zip file) and you DONT open it, you just save it INTO
speedtouchconf-20-03-2004 FOLDER, now make that zip file IS executable
as well.

in the folder speedtouchconf-20-03-2004 go to top of the file manager and click on TOOLS then OPEN TERMINAL.
Copy this command into it ./speedtouchconf.sh and press enter,
first of all your be asked for your dial in number (if in uk it would be 0 38 and the gap between the 0 and 38 must be in).
Then enter your user name then password.
Now make sure you alcatel is connected before you press the next enter.
It will set it all up for you and connect you to your net ISP.
it will now ask you to set up auto connect at boot say YES (but it wont work with Lindows).
So here the last bit that took me ages to suss out.

Right click on your desk top, CLICK ON CREATE NEW ,THEN LINK TO NEW APPLICATION.
enter ADSL in the box. the go to the top click on this application and click on EXECUTE.
now in the top space, copy and paste this into it

/root/speedtouchconf-20-03-2004/speedtouch-init start

the put a tick in RUN IN TERMINAL

then click ok at the bottom.

As
long as you have followed these instructions you will be on the net in
5mins. and when you restart your machine all you do is click on the
ADSL link on your desktop and your on the net.

Regards
Les
