Hi
I have just bought a Canon Pixma iP1500 printer, when I tried to install it under Mepis I discoverd Canon do no provide Linux drivers.???? Any?? ideas?? on?? how?? I?? can?? get?? to?? work?? with?? Mepis.
Regards Jim

You may have to go with trial

You may have to go with trial and error using the driver list provided in Mepis. For instance, I have a Canon i850 and found that the driver for the BJC-7400 works reasonably well for my printer. I have heard that the Canon Japan site has some linux drivers, but I have not investigated this yet (mostly since I can't read Japanese). I have also heard that alot of these printers (like winmodems) are essentially winprinters and unless someone actually writes the code for a driver, you probably won't find one. Don't take my word as gospel though, some of the folks here are a lot smarter and more versed in Linux than I; hopefully someone can provide you with an answer. If not, maybe one of the drivers provided in Mepis will work for you as it did for me.

Best of luck, Jeff

Try Turboprint

Hi Oldjim
Try turboprint. It's a good (paid) program that supplies drivers for lots of printers. Works fine in my experience. They can be found here: http://www.turboprint.de/english.html

Newbie or not Newbie, there's always a question

Hi Thanks for the suggestio

Hi
Thanks for the suggestion, I downloaded and installed the free version of TurboPrint, unfortunately it seemed to have a driver for just about every Canon printer you could think of, except mine.
So unfortunately, I will have to go back to working my way through the driver list and trying to find one that works.

Regards Jim

P.S I am no longer a virgin, I have finally managed to install something from a tar-ball.

Hi Call me lazy if you wi

Hi
Call me lazy if you wish, but I could not face spending days going though printer drivers looking for the right one for my printer.
So I decided to take it back and get another one, a Canon Pixma iP 2000, I know TurboLinux do drivers for it.
Brought it home plugged it in configured it in KDE, and it worked! All I have to do now is buy a license (shades of Bill the Bandit here).

Thanks to everybody how helped me solve the problem.

Jim

Happy printing

Happy printing Jim. But one question since you brought it back, why didn you just buy a printer that's natively supported under Linux ..... Laughing out loud

Hi Not being the brightest

Hi
Not being the brightest of bunnys, it never ocured to me I needed to check, I just assumed it would work. Never mind, all sorted now, thanks to all your help

Jim

pixma iP1500 driver

The TurboPrint i250 or i350 driver should work fine with the iP1500 - really no diff but for the new plastic. And the i450 should work with the iP2000 - no real diff there either.

TurboPrint free edition for i350

Hi, sorry to go back on the conversation (I'm very new to linux) I have a i350 printer that I'm trying to use with my newly (2 days) instaled Mepis and I'm wanting to give TurboPrint a try but cannot get it to run. I downloaded and unziped the tar and followed the instructions of the doc as best as I could but when I run setup I get:

./setup: line 41: bin/tpsetup: cannot execute binary file

So That was when I run setup. and then everytime I try to run one of the executables I get: 'cannot execute binary file'
I don't know what I'm doing wrong.
Please can someone help?

Carlops - I can give you

Carlops - I can give you several good reasons to go with a Canon printer even with the lack of linux support outside of turboprint: [1] Damn few printers can produce a picture of the quality that you can get out of a canon printer, [2] separate print cartridges for each color (8 of them in my Canon i9900) keep your printing costs down, [3] brand name Canon print cartridges are reasonably priced compared to other brand name printers, and [4] Canon doesn't sue ink cartridge refillers like some other brand name printer companies I could name. :>)
