Card Reader

Hi
The other day I bought a 8 in 1 card reader from my local ALDI's (a good buy at ??10).
It worked fine with Mepis, except there was no CD icon on my desktop, just a hard disk icon for the card reader: ???Strange??? I though ???never mind, I will fix it with a reboot.???
But after rebooting Mepis, I found I still had the same problem, no CD icon and when I looked in the fstab, there was no mention of a CD drive.
Now being fairly new to Linux, and Mepis in particular, I had no idea what to do, and as I had not made a backup of the fstab, I decided that the best thing to do was reinstall the O/S.
So as I had a Mepis 2004.04 disk I decided to upgrade at the same time, the install went smoothly with no problems (what a wonderful distro Mepis is) and as I sat here happily drinking tea, I suddenly realized that I still had absolutely no idea what had caused the original problem.
So, I am writing to you in the hope that somebody can come up with some idea of what I did wrong, so I can avoid doing the same thing again, the next time I use the card reader.
I do realize I am just a little late in asking for help with this problem, and I promise, I wont take it amiss if you all tell me to go boil my head.
Hopefully Jim
P.S. Does anyone know the apt-get instruction for the Open Office quick starter.

Hi
Just a quick note to say that the problem has been solved with the help another forum (Linux Questions).
The answer is to plug the memory card into the reader before booting up the computer, aparently there is in bug in the 2.6 linux kernel, that sulks if you just boot up with the only the card reader.

USB-masstorgae support in L

USB-masstorgae support in Linux really pisses me off
There are so many nice devices that are connected through the USB port and it's nearly impossible to get a functional setup of these. I now have a 6in1 cardreader, 2 usb-sticks and one 6in1 cardreader in my printer. I'll maybe buy an external USB2-harddrive also. Even if I have made some working fstab lines, the next time I boot up I have a few lines more that were created automagically and messes up everything. Every time I plug a usb-masstorage device I get a new line like /mnt/camera and camera1 even if it is a 128Mb usb-stick. This is the real plug and pray. Every now and then it mounts the usb-stick where the compactflash card should be mounted
There has been usb-masstorage support from kernel 2.4.x but I haven't yet seen a kernel that works with these kind of devices. I have tried to avoid these kind of devices but now everyone have these and it would be great fun to have them. USB2 external harddrive

I don't think you did anything wrong, my camera shows up on the desktop with the same icon as a hard drive ... works fine. Did your card reader work?
