Reconfiguring Xf86config

This might be basic to some but I suspect a few will save time on it:
If you find your re-configuration by xf86config doesn't work, as it breaks x so startx doesn't get x-windows going and you remain in text mode, start by making a backup copy of XF86Config-4 and save it in your home dir.
Make the changes to XF86Config-4 in kedit as root and save the file skipping xf86config entirely.
I experienced this while I was trying different settings of the videocard in the file: ati, radeon, r128, vesa
