Kernel upgrade ... other Qs
Posts: 10
Hey all, and thanks Warren for the first non-Windows OS Ive stuck with for longer than a week.?? Been using Mepis (SimplyMepis2004.01), which Ive kept up to date with Synaptic.?? The most recent versions of packages under the mepis section are meauto-data 2004.02 and simplymepis 2004.2 (I assume those are the most up to date)
Recently upgraded to the 2.6.10-rc1 kernel, and its running fine, except I wasn't able to get the patches in /usr/src/linux-2.6.7 folder to apply right.?? How can I modify them so they will apply right next time I compile the kernel?
Another question regards my printer, an Epson 785epx.?? It prints sometimes, often it just initializes but nothing prints, or it just sits there siliently.?? How can I get the printer setup properly and printing?
My last problem is with Mozilla and Firefox, both browsers are giving me the "document contains no data error" on various websites, especially the yahoo email site.?? Tried all the suggestions on the mozillazine site, with no joy.?? Anyone with a similar problem have any ideas?
Thanks
KE

When I upgraded the Kernel, I read the following excellent howto links and combined their method to upgrade mine, using the append-to-version option, its very easy and straight forward, took me about 10 minutes of doing and 45minutes waiting for the compile to finish. I didn't apply the Mepis kernel patches, but it still works fine, I just don't get the bootsplash, not sure if I missed any other features, you can specify info for your processor when you do make-menuconfig, this will make the kernel processor specific. Good luck

btw, fixed the printer problem, driver had been unloaded for some reason.

Hi all and KE,
I've had MEPIS one or more of machines, off and on now for a year. I took a break from MEPIS to take the plunge into Gentoo-land, having been shamed by colleagues for not being a "real man"?? and I really did learned a lot. But it took?? many long nights of compiling, recompiling and waiting days for sources to compile. I'm over that now, after much therapy :lol????
Now that I've returned to MEPIS for good, I do miss one thing from Gentoo,?? I really liked being able to tweak the kernel and strip it down to only the stuff I need. If I remember correctly, I was able to boot my Gentoo sytem with KDE in about 20 seconds. So, I have three questions which are related to KE's post.
1) How can I upgrade the kernel in MEPIS as time goes along?
2) Are there processor specific kernels, such as for an AMD K-7 (Athlon 1200)
3) How do I go about compiling the Debian based Kernels.??
If there are some resources I can be pointed to, I don't care to do the work and write up a howto about all of this.
TIA
