Morgantown, WV; December 15, 2004: MEPIS LLC has released SimplyMEPIS 2004.06. This latest CD adds font support for Simplified Chinese and Japanese. Additional CJ support is planned. Other CD improvements include an updated GRUB bootloader for better hardware compatibility and updated parted and qtparted for improved disk formatting support during installation.

An updated version of alsa-modules for kernel 2.6 is preinstalled and also available in the MEPIS pool. meauto and meauto-data have been improved for better hardware compatibility, especially for sound card support. Due to a previous conflict with another package, meauto should not be updated directly. Current users of SimplyMEPIS can perform a key function update, including meauto, by running from a root commandline:
apt-get update
apt-get install simplymepis
or doing the equivalent from kpackage or synaptic. Anyone who has modified their apt configuration and anyone who has performed a "dist-upgrade" no longer has a standard MEPIS configuration and may encounter problems using the updated simplymepis metapackage.

SimplyMEPIS is a complete desktop Linux that fetures the KDE 3.2.3 desktop, OpenOffice 1.1.2, Mozilla 1.7.2, GIMP2, Xine, and many other applications to give the desktop user everything needed to quickly become productive in the SimplyMEPIS desktop Linux environment.

sounds great Warren! maybe

sounds great Warren!

maybe I am too impatient, but I do not see it on any of the download locations or mirrors.?? I am guessing it has not propogated out to everyone yet?

Where is the new simplymepis package?

As digitalmouse, I don't see any new package in connection with the new.

North American Mirror has it!!!

the university of florida (ufl.edu) ftp site has the 2004.06 ISO available for download. i am currently getting around 180KB/s

Sound progress

I installed 2004.06 with great expectations of getting sound . It recognized my SoundBlaster card finally--oboy! -- but I couldn't get any sound out of XMMS, only sound visualizations.

We're so close now, what could be missing?

florida url?

luckysnafu- can you pass along the florida ftp url (assuming it's open)- i'm trying a download at debianworld, but only getting about 1.5KB/s...?? i'm guessing they have been swamped already.?? or i guess i just wait until a few more european mirrors pick it up.

mrbass.org

It is also available from mrbass.org. Look for Mepis Linux on the main page. Once you are inside Mepis Linux you will see the link to the download. Mrbass.org is a very nice site for many reasons, including the support he gives Mepis.

Don't forget access via the ftp site

Another great release of Mepis. It was up on the Mepis ftp site immediately - no waiting and fast download. A very inexpensive subscription will let give you access to everything Mepis Warren releases.

I think it's the best way to say thanks to him.

Thanks Warren,

Darrell

Excellent

I left Mepis after the first release because of a few issues I could not iron out. I tried this release and you have me back. All I can say is wow! Sound is flawless video is great. The Mepis specific tools are great. Warren you have outdone yourself!

Freaky fast! Not sure how you did it?

Just dropped the rather flaky Mandrake 10.1 Community for Mepis 2004.6, installed nvidia-glx and under the exact same benchmark settings (1024x768@16bit) get nearly 150% the performance of my "bleeding edge" Mandy!

I realize that Mepis is running a different kernel (2.6.7 vs 2.6.Cool, different X server and older nvidia drivers (6111 vs 6629) but I have *NEVER* seen that sort of performance on my hardware with --any-- distro, kernel or drivers!

Congratulations!?? I think Mepis just became my choice *gaming* distro!?? I'll be renewing my subscription promptly!

P.S.?? Any hope for Mepis A64 for nforce4 and 939??? That's my next linux gaming machine Eye-wink

Wireless card support

Warren.

I am a huge fan of SimplyMEPIS, and have converted some of my friends to it from windows. But you and I, we have a problem. I cannot get my wavelan wireless card to be recognized by Mepis, and it angers me. Is there better wireless support in 2004.06?

This isn't Warren's fault a

This isn't Warren's fault at all.

They say if you play a Microsoft CD backwards you hear satanic messages.
That's nothing. If you play it forwards, it installs Windows!

Re: Sound progress

I didn't get any sound on my 2004.04 installation until I ran alsaconfig.

simplymepis 2006.06 apt-get upgrade

My current version is 2004.02. Using KPackage, I attempted to upgrade to the 2006.06 package, first as part of a system upgrade, then individually, but I received the following error:

Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.

Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that
the package is simply not installable and a bug report against
that package should be filed.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:

simplymepis: Depends: meauto (>= 2004.06) but it is not going to be installed

E: Broken packages

I get the same results running apt-get from the command line. Can someone suggest a solution to this problem?

Upgrading to SimplyMepis 2004.06

I culled through the other forums and found the solution which I am posting here in case it will help someone else.

You would run the following apt-get commands:

apt-get update

apt-get install hwdata/unstable

apt-get install meauto

apt-get install simplymepis

This is what worked for me. I hope this will help anyone who was experiencing the same problem I had.

Try using kmix or alsamixer

Try using kmix or alsamixer to turn on the master volume, external amplifier, etc.?? 2 of 4 Mepis installations I've done have been silent until I did this.

Linux Gaming for Dummies

I'm currently running World of Warcraft under Mepis with Cedega installed. The stability of the game increased dramatically under Mepis compared to Windows XP (Fresh XP install, latest updates, chipset, video, sound...etc). If those Cedega guys figure out how to fix the OpenGL issues with World of Warcraft, the speed increase will be dramatic too (from what I've seen).

The installation was the easiest I've tried out of 10 or so distributions. I'm a (soon to be former) DOS/Windows person, and I'm still fumbling my way around the Linux world. If only ATI would wise up and start making better, easier Linux drivers, I'd have Mepis on all my machines.

I'm currently running 2004.6, but taking a hard look at 2005.4. I like the default packages better. Two 2004.6 comments: I had to get rid of Grub and install Lilo to get Mepis to cooperate with my XP (NTFS, same hard drive Eye-wink) for dual boot. As this isn't an advertised feature of Mepis, I don't consider it a bug. In a completely separate issue, on another machine, I couldn't get 2004.6 to recognize the Microsoft *duck* Bluetooth Desktop. It sees the Bluetooth dongle, but it doesn't have Bluetooth HID support built in, and I'm consistently frustrated when I try to learn how to compile my own kernel to add such a feature.

Warren, keep up the great work on Mepis. You are taking huge steps toward making Linux available to a much wider audience.

Thanks,
Jim
