Video card and monitor

There is no visual problem. However my card can run comfortably at a 85 Hertz refresh frequency and my monitor??is set at 70 Hertz. Also my card can run at 32 bit color with 1024 x 768 and it appears set at 16 bit color at a lower screen resolution.

My video card is a Matrox P650, which I believe is the bottom of the line new Matrox Parhelia series. My monitor is an IIYama HM204DT A which is a Vision Master Pro 514 monitor. Both are set with with the appropriate drivers for Windows but neither have setups for Linux although Matrox has some sort of .run file for RedHat.

Being new to Linux, and attempting to??transition to it from Windows as I continue to learn more about it, I am trying to understand XFree86 and how one tells it about a particular video adapter and a particular monitor. In Mepis it seems as if there is no graphical representation for this on the video adapter side, which seems odd, and my monitor does not appear in the list of monitors on the Monitor tab. I am on the XFree86 mailing list, and have queried whether or not my video adapter and monitor are supported, but with no answers so far.

I did some investigation and evidently Matrox does not put out a driver for Linux for the Parhelia, and X does not have a setup for Parhelia even in 4.4, so I am reduced to using the VESA driver. Still I am wondering why in MEPIS there is no graphical interface to choosing one's video adapter, only one's monitor. Any idea why this is so ? It seems a distinct limitation of MEPIS.
