2003.10.01 feedback

Boy, does this torrential thing rock!

Warren, since you had taken the trouble to address my request with
this point release, I thought I owed you some feedback. Here goes:

  • keyboard layout issue - I really hope you won't think I am
pestering you about it, but once it's sorted out, hey that's one
bug less to care about! Plus hopefully the problems we resolve
for my locale will benefit users from other countries too. Right,
setting LANG="C" works better than the previously incorrect "be",
so that's all fine. Now, I still had this weird problem of the Alt/
AltGr key not working under X, so lots of useful character were
impossible to compose. I traced it to the "Xkblayout" option in
/etc/X11/XF86Config-4 being set to "be-latin1". If I replace that
with simply "be", all is fine. Console and X keyboard names are not
always the same. FYI, the 1st live under /usr/share/keymaps/i386/
whereas the latter are to be found at /etc/X11/xkb/symbols/pc/

  • trying to add the "System Monitor" applet to the panel resulted
in a crash (of the applet) for me. This is nasty, as kicker apparently
registers the applet and tries to restart it automatically in all
following sessions, which makes it crash!

  • it seems my beloved (g)vim is not included even on the 2d CD. But -gasp-
emacs is! Seriously, I can understand choosing the lighter "elvis"
for the base system, but vim should be available as an installable
package, since it really is the most used (and capable) vi clone
these days. With a lower priority, could you please do a favor to
the old unix-heads like me by considering the incluSion of pdksh?
Also, 'view' is an alias for read-only invocation of vi on all
    unix-like system I ever met...

  • the system time appears to be what it probably is on the US east
coast. Is there any way to leave it at what the PC clock says, with
no timezone adjustment whatsoever? Then I guess everybody would be
pleased, as opposed to 1/24th of the world population Eye-wink
Maybe this is a side effect of setting LANG=C?

  • It might be nice to define a few shell aliases for bash sessions.
Eg ls='ls -alF' etc... BTW, one thing I already noticed with
knoppix, why on earth do we get such an absurdly long function list
when typing "set" at a bash prompt (2500+ lines) ? I suspect regular
user sessions inherit stuff they shouldn't from some bootup script
    or something...

[*] nothing happens when inserting the CD in a Windows machine.
Displaying the index.html info wouldn't hurt, would it? If you're
    interested, look here.

    Have a nice week-end,

PS: I think the default session duration on the forum is too low.
It's not the 1st time this happens to me: my session apparently
died betwenn the time I started composing this very post and the
moment I hit "submit", resulting in confusion...

  • how to edit one's own post?

Aargh! the preview for the above longish comment _did_ preserve
the newlines, but that's not what I see now! Any simple way to
    cleanup this mess?

    VI vs EMACS

Actually alot of us use emacs as well and see vi as an experiment in personal self-torture Smiling but as they say different strokes for different folks. Actually, the idea of having another supplemental CD just for coders has crossed my mind from time to time when working with Mepis. There is already a ton of development tools available "out of the box" with Mepis but there is always room for more...as for me, I would love to see more Python support (PyQT just doesn't want to install, even after I used two or three of my best curse words on it), more dev lib support and so on. Since most of the users are not coders this would by definition be an extra CD to download but it would be so cool to have those extra features at hand.
Also, for what it is worth, I agree about the New York thing and I live in the US (albeit not in that time-zone). You do have to remember that is where Warren lives though so the mistake is understandable.
    Happy Saturday...
    Jeff

    Time zone problem solved?

    Hi there,

I never saw a solution for the time-zone problem!
How can I solve it? Everytime I use MEPIS (and I try to use it as much as possible) my hardwareclock is set to an american timezone.
I haven't been able to find a solution on the forum!

    Suggestions?

    Thanks,

    Marcel Gommans

Re: Defining your timezone in MEPIS ...

    Hello,

I read your posting and I had the same problem. I am from Europe and having New York as my time zone isn't exactly right for me :|

    What you have to do:

    • login as root
    • cd /etc
    • ls -al localtime

Now look at that file ... the file "localtime" should be a symbolic link to /usr/share/zoneinfo/America/New_York

That's of course wrong. So you just delete that file and create a symbolic link to the correct time zone (I will use Paris as example):

    • rm /etc/localtime
    • ln -s /usr/share/zoneinfo/Europe/Paris localtime

Now look at that file again: It should now point to the correct time zone. Just go to this directory: /usr/share/zoneinfo ... I am sure you will find something that should be correct for your time zone.

Your system will display the correct time upon next reboot; however, if you want the system clock to be corrected immediately, you can stop and restart this boot script:

    • /etc/init.d/hwclockfirst.sh stop
    • /etc/init.d/hwclockfirst.sh start

Type in "date" and check if your system now shows the correct time for your time zone (should be the case).

    Regards,

    DJM.

    Time Zone

I believe that the next version of Mepis will have an easy way to set your Time Zone that will also stick. Currently, part of the problem comes from the confusing interface available for almost all distros as far as I know.

easier way to set time zone

Right-click on the clock in your K Panel, select Adjust Date & Time, and pick the timezone there. You'll have to restart your KDE session in order to get the clock in the panel to update, but the timezone's set. I never looked at my /etc/localtime before, but I see that it's pointing to what it's supposed to point to, not New York.

    re: VI vs EMACS

I think the supplemental CD should contain Mepis specific/customized applications. Many apps (like emacs and VIM) seem like they are better fetched from Debian unstable repositories. Why burn CD space on them?

(Yes I realize this comment is totally biased against people that don't have broadband internet - but you are a shrinking minority!)

    Hi warren, I've just tried

Hi warren, I've just tried MEPIS (I also consider myself a newb on linux, but definitle not on computing Smiling). I plan to install Linux desktop for office use on the company I worked for so I'm reviewing some desktop oriented distros.

I have tried MEPIS in Live mode and today I'm going to try to install it.

    Here's my feedback:
    - I think it would be better if MEPIS mount the existing harddisk on startup
-?? MEPIS correctly detected my ethernet card (D-LINK 538 TX) but failed to start it up. I've tried to use GUI system configurator to activate the IP connection on the interface but it doesn't work. A little visit to Konsole and ifconfig solved them though. But still, I think user should not need to reserve to CLI when the distro already provide the graphical tool for the job. Knoppix doesn't have any problem with this.
    - MEPIS Live eats memory like ther's no tommorow !! I cannot run OOo on my 256 MB system, Knoppix has no problem running OOo on my 128 MB system.

Other than that I think you've done beautifuly with MEPIS, and I thank you for that. Today I'm going to try to install it to find out more about this wonderful distro.
    Smiling
    thx.

    Hi, I've installed MEPIS o

Hi, I've installed MEPIS on my office desktop PC. And here's my feedback:
    1. Nice Installer !!!
    2. I like my /boot on separate partition from my / but the installer only give option for swap, / and /home . More freedom to design our placement will be good.
    3. Ha !!! OOo works fine now !!!! Smiling
    4. I want to upgrade my kernel to 2.6.3, but the MEPIS kernel is said to be custom kernel. Will there be any trouble if I decide to upgrade the kernel ?
    5. It's rather hard to find the file manager on the KDE menu, I think the menu can be organized a little better, not to say that the menu lay out is bad though. Not at all, in fact it's good. Just think that there's still room for improvement Smiling
    6. The Wallpaper is rather dull. I know, its knittpicking Eye-wink

Well, all in all, it's a wonderful experience. I'll let you know more after i do more tinkering with my installation Smiling
