ProMEPIS 2005 Beta 3 for the Holidays

Morgantown, WV, December 24, 2004: MEPIS has announced the release of Beta 03 of ProMEPIS Linux. It is available for test and evaluation at the usual mirror sites and from the MEPIS premium ftp site.

The changes since Beta 02 include improved font support in Firefox and simple screen font resizing from the OS Center. In response to user requests, Gaim is now the default instant messenger client, Xchat is the IRC client, kdenetwork filesharing handles basic NFS share management, telnet client is included, and Guidedog manages IP routing. Also Kino DV video editor and PTPP VPN client and kernel support have been reinstalled in ProMEPIS.

Meauto has been modifed to support isa cards. This module has seen limited testing but it appears to work out-of-the-box with the Dell Optiplex GX1.

Preinstalled kernel drivers have been expanded to include ivtv, usbvision, and fglrx. At this time, the ATI fglrx-4.3.0-driver GLX module must be installed and configured manually but in the next release this will be managed from the OS Center.

ProMEPIS is scheduled for final release in January 2005.

Thanks Warren and Merry Chr

Thanks Warren and Merry Christmas: This former windose user is really happy with the leaps and bounds you have accomplished with user friendly linux and really appreciate your ability to listen to the user and build his wants and needs into Mepis which is really a Super accomplishment.

THANKYOU SO MUCH WARREN!!a

THANKYOU SO MUCH WARREN!!

a very merry christmas to you indeed!

this is a wonderful holiday present!

Working great btw! Laughing out loud

It keeps getting better

I installed beta 3 on my test drive and was very impressed. I am running an asus K8V deluxe mb, amd-64 3200 cpu with 1gig of 2700 ddrsdram. I run simply mepis as my main system and it is very good with some minor problems that will work out with kernel updates. I was ready to switch to the pro ver. but then realized I will have a problem of not being able to xfer my email personal folders into kmail or thunderbird. I am using the full version of mozilla with simply mepis. I would switch to the pro ver. in a heartbeat if I could have it with the full mozilla with all the plugins. Aside from that it is the best Linux system that I have tried so far and I have tried many in the last 2 & 1/2 years that I have been using linux. I am a long time Dos and windows user but know very little linux command line. In a way that makes me a good judge if Linux is ready for the desk top for the average user and I feel without a doubt that it is. I have my wife using it on her machine and she would never go back to windows and I will soon have my daughter set up. Great work Warren.

Shutdown

Just tried Promepis with a fresh install.?? It worked great in every way except for one thing.?? The kernel 2.6.7 still does not shut down my pc.?? In order to shut down my pc I have to stay with simplymepis and kernel 2.4.26 which shuts down my pc.
When I?? say shut down, I mean to turn the power off completely.

Upgradin from ProMepis b02

I tryed to upgrade with "preserve home" from an installed Simply 2004-4, but all applications and settings of my previous root were lost. Never mind, it was an experiment.

Is there a way to upgrade from b02 to b03 (or to the final Pro 2005), saving installed applications and setting of root user? What I found in this forum and in Mepislovers seems to apply only to the contents of the /home directory, but most of my applications and settings in my present b02 installation are in the "/" directory. The apt command "distro-upgrade" did not work.

Thanks

Francesco

Mepis seems ready for laptop use to me.

I have an old Compaq Presario 1200XL notebook with an Orinoco Gold 802.11b wireless adapter. I didn't feel right trashing it, and thought I could get more mileage out of it if I installed linux on it. I've tried Suse, Mandrake, Fedora, Lycoris, Ubuntu and Mepis on it.

Ubuntu and Mepis, both Debian based packages are the only OS's I've installed and had EVERYTHING work on my notebook without making a single configuration change.

Mepis' edge over Ubuntu has been twofold - I have been able to get Mepis to work with a shared smb printer and not Ubuntu, and Mepis provides numerous plugins to the Mozilla web browser. Although Ubuntu supplies the more current Firefox browser, there are no pre-installed plugins.

All in all, I would give SimplyMepis a 9 out of 10 score on my notebook.

I installed ProMepis on the machine, and everything works just as well.
