using 3 hard drives

I installed MEPIS from a Windows installation, and thought it would make life simpler if I used a clean new hard drive for MEPIS. The PeeCee already had two drives. Turns out that Win2000 will let you have ONLY two hard drives designated "Primary" ... altho' you can tell the system (or in my case, Partition Magic) that the third hard drive should be a Primary, and it won't complain (yet).
When I tried to format the 3rd hard drive, it would go through the motions -- look like all was well -- and give a not-useful error message at the end. "Failed CRC check." I thought I had a bad hard drive. Eventually I realized that I had to make one of the hard drives a "logical" drive, leaving the new drive and the old C drive as Primary. At that point the system would format the new drive with no problems. It was easy once I caught on.
Moral: It is not that you have to follow the rules; rather it is that you must know all the rules.

I??did the same thing.?? Have a 40 GB?? Master on IDE channel 1, a 2 GB (document drive) Slave on IDE channel 1.?? Then a Master CD RW on IDE Channel 2, and then new 4 GB 'clean' Mepis drive as slave on IDE channel 2.
I had no such problem and am confused about what happened to you.?? By primary to you mean on the primary IDE channel? I have XP though which might have doen that all automaticaly, in windows explorer it displayed it in blue, maybe that measn logical.?? Now there is no linux partition and doesn't show up at all so I couldn't check.
