ProMEPIS 2005 Gets New Kernel in Beta 04

Morgantown, WV, January 8, 2005: Warren has announced the release of Beta 04 of ProMEPIS Linux. It is available for test and evaluation at the usual mirror sites and from the MEPIS premium FTP site. A big change is the introduction of kernel 2.6.10, replacing the older kernel 2.6.7. The new kernel has many hardware and performance improvements, yet it comes at a price.

MEPIS was slow to introduce a newer kernel due to instabilities caused by restrictive policy and code changes introduced by the kernel team after 2.6.7. The changes have raised the bar for Linux distro developers, because it is necessary to recode some third party drivers and abandon others, including the unfortunate loss of the Philips WebCam driver. See: http://www.smcc.demon.nl/webcam/

Warren has decided that 2.6.10 is about as good as it's going to get, and we just have to workaround the remaining obstacles. Since the 2.6.10 kernel is very new, there was no win4lin patch at the time Beta 04 was released. It is expected that the win4lin patch will be included in Release Candidate 1.

The latest MEPIS bootable CD is believed to be compatible with more hardware and there are improvements to the MEPIS OS Center that should eliminate some installation problems. The fglrx ATI driver can now be installed from the OS Center but this code needs to be improved.

Skype has been updated. The ivtv driver has been tested with a PVR-350 card and a vanilla installation of Pro Beta 04, but the ivtv utilities have not yet been packaged with MEPIS. A typo was corrected that affected automatic loading of the C-Media ALSA driver.

The standalone slamr driver is no longer compatible with standard kernels. MEPIS is now using the ALSA Project version of the driver which seems to work well.

ProMEPIS is scheduled for final release in late January or early February 2005.

Thank you very much warren for this ditrib' and for the upgrade to kernel 2.6.10 Laughing out loud

Et vive MEPIS "in french" Eye-wink

ProMepis Beta 4 OK

Another rock solid "beta". Installed over my beta 3 test preserving the home partition and everthing went well. I had heard of problems with the nvidia driver in 2.6.10 in other distros but works perfectly here.

Thanks Warren,

Darrell

KDE Control Center SIGSEGV

In ProMEPIS 2005.bo4, launching the KDE Control Center causes a Sig 11 (SIGSEGV). Stock live CD or HD install, as root or as normal user, it crashes on Signal 11.

The KDE Control Center under ProMEPIS 2005.b03 works perfectly.

Installed on:
DFI Infinity (NF2 Chipset), onboard LAN and SATA disabled
Mobile XP 2400+
256 Mbtye memory
Siemens Speedstream 1025 PCI 802.11b

Sound, wireless NIC and all other hardware appear to work very well.

Excellent

Very good release. However, the wlan-ng drivers are still borked here (apparently an upstream issue?).

ProMEPIS 2005 Gets New Kernel in Beta 04

Installs fine over b3 on my p4/3ghz/1gb/ 2 ata/1 sata/1cdrw/1 dvdrw.
K3b burns dvd iso's/ xine plays same correctly with only location change for dvd drive.

However Minolta PagePro 1350w although detected correctly still won't print even a test page, Mandrake 10.1 does, go figure.

Wireless

I am at the end of my rope trying to get a Wireless card to work with ANY linux.?? Can you tell me what wireless you are using and I will go out a buy it.?? Thank you.

wireless

have a look through the networking forum for ideas, as well as google for working hardware lists

I'm using Dlink wireless products all based on the Atheros chipset and they all work with Mepis.

The specific models are:

Desktop:?? DWL-AB520
Laptop:?? DWL-AG650

They both worked with ProMepis 2005 Beta 3 right out of the install.?? They were detected, the networked was detected, and I was connected to the network/Internet without ANY configuration required.??

Thanks Warren!!!

The only other distro that came close was SuSE 9.1 Personal but it required me to do some configuration and... it wouldn't detect the Dlink DWL-AB520.

Mepis ROCKS!!!

wireless success

After spending hours not getting usb wireless to work, I purchased a Netgear WGE101 wireless ethernet bridge. After configuring it with windoz, it worked effortlessly with Mepis and FedoraC3.

Orinoco USB

I don't know what you have, but I've had luck with independently developed drivers for Orinoco USB cards (on my Compaq W200), using scripts created by Oystein Olsen (http://folk.uio.no/oeysteio/orinoco-usb/index.html). Not knowing any other way, I've always downloaded the kernel source and compiled (also allowing other modifications), and then used Oystein's source package scripts to install both firmware (software loading, doesn't affect your wireless under Win) and drivers. I've successfully done this under many versions of Mepis and other Debian builds. So at least one type of stubborn wireless can work. BTW, I've never gotten mine to work with wlan-ng or linuxant.

ATI drivers seem to provide no 3D acceleration

ATI drivers are worse than the "radeon" driver that was loaded initially by default. glxgears reports 250 FPS with ATI fglrx drivers. UNUSABLE
While ACPI can be setup it still doesn't work properly. There are no profiles for the processor setup by default. And none of the powersavings really works, such as hiberantion, suspend, etc.
I see no improvement!

Im about to give up myself an

Im about to give up myself and stick to FBSD, where my wireless 'just works'...?????? ( too bad sound doesnt.. )

the Gimp

Just wondering if the Gimp 2.2 is in this Beta?

Very positive experience with beta 4

Good afternoon,

I have uninstalled beta 3 and then installed beta 4 yesterday. With the newer kernel, the system seems to be more responsive overall. Moreover, this version of kernel 2.6 is now able to power off my computer unlike 2.6.7 which prompted me to manually turn it off. The KPackage program no longer reports "connection timeouts" or "unable to fetch certain packages" from certain servers at least for now. The CD-ROM icon is responsive to mount/unmount commands and I also am able to do just the same for hard drives from a console prompt: "mount /dev/hdcx /mnt/hdcx" or "umount /mnt/hdcx" whereas is KNOPPIX the CD-ROM icon link was broken for some reason and couldn't mount/unmount a CD from konsole either. Reading a CD-RW formatted by InCD was impossible but the opposite is true with ProMEPIS. Except for these annoyances and packages that were sitting just there (zile, emacs, xtree, joe etc.), ProMEPIS is on par with KNOPPIX, only better.
There is another issue I would like to talk about. I am not sure if this is related to me or to many others. My sound card is an Audio Sound Blaster Live! with EMU10K1 processor and correct driver loaded (EMU10K1, configuration correct also?) I am able to hear sound but when I open an audio/video file in either XMMS, xine, RealPlayer and probably the same holds true for other media players there is delay of up to two seconds until I hear the sound. For example, when opening XMMS to listen to a radio station over the internet (EuropaFM Romania from my country (emits in mp3 format) or any other station from around the world (other emission format)) after typing in the location URL in the Play Location dialog, the connection is not made. I have to open the same dialog again and then it connects. During the transmission (live/non-live) when pressing Pause, there is also a 2 seconds delay until no more sound is heard. The same happens when repressing the Play button to resume and rehear the sound. Local sound files experience the same symptom. Video files with sound experience the same symptom as well with both xine and RealPlayer. To check if this is not an issue with a particular version, I have downloaded and installed the lastest version of RealPlayer (10.0.2.687) but doing so, did not solve the problem. The problem surfaced as well with beta 3 and Simply MEPIS 2004.04 and .06 that I have tried. I never experienced this issues with any version of KNOPPIX, including 3.7. I think that this problem may be related to the customized 2.6 MEPIS kernel/ALSA sound system. KNOPPIX was probably using the official 2.6 kernel without customizations but I am not sure if that is so. If true, it means that there is a problem with the MEPIS kernel. Is anyone else experiencing the same problem?

System (bought last century... 1999):

AMD Athlon 600 MHz
ASUS K7M Slot A motherboard
Audio Blaster Live! sound card bought in 2001

Thank you Warren Woodford for your insight into producing a Linux distribution with simplicity, originality and good quality, popular packages. Maybe a beta 5 would be a welcome announcement ro rid off all the possible bugs. I anxiously wait for the final release of ProMEPIS 2005!

Nvidia 3D on a fresh install?

I am VERY eager to get running on 2.6.10 but I must have working 3D accelloration!

I *know* that nvidia drivers work wonderfully on Simply and I know (from reading other comments here) that others have nvidia working by installing B04 on top of an existing install... but does anyone have it working from a *fresh* install?

Love your work Warren!?? Just wish you had an updated change log and package list, and of course, an easy link to find them.

XMMS Problem

Hello, anton123
I also hade problems with xmms and couldn't get the visualizations like spectrum analyzer, blur scope etc.. working right they were slow and jerky, also when I tried to stop the sound my player also had a delay before things would happen. I was able to fix this by going in to preferences and changing the output-plugin from aRts to alsa its set by default to aRts. everthing works great now. Might want to give it a try.

Broken gtksu installed with synaptic

Assumption most people will install gtksu via synaptic.
That said a perl base module is lacking. However, while still on my list of things todo, I found I had fixed it inadvertently when I tried to reconfigure bootsplash via synaptic and lacked the dependency?? "libgnome2-perl".

its (almost) all good

Promemis 2005 b3 was the 1st version of mepis that I had tried and was most impressed. I have now updated to b4 and am pretty happy with it. My windows box is only now used for games and playing movies.
The only problem I ran into was that even though I upgraded and told it to preserve my home directory it still lost the files that were in there and reset kde back to the default layout (not the custom layout I use).

Cheers

USB Wireless Success

I am still using Simply Mepis. I had some trouble getting my D-Link DWL-122 USB wireless to work. I could get it up but the device would disappear under any sort of load.

I am using the wlan-ng drivers which are a little harder to configure since you have to edit the config files in /etc/wlan correctly. They are pretty well documented so it isn't too difficult.

The magic bullet for my system -- to alleviate the disappearing device (wlan0 does not exist) -- was to add the following line to my /etc/modules.conf file:

alias wlan0 prism2_usb

Now the DWL-122 seems very stable. Impressive little wireless adapter and it's saving a PCI slot on my Micro-ATX AMD64 system.

New user looking for a Wind

New user looking for a Windows replacement for my better half.
Looks pretty good. Tried a couple of other distros, and things failed for different reasons.
Like 2.6.10 - would have preferred a later optimization, but I'm spoilt I guess (Gentoo).

Looks like her ladyship will be using MEPIS - congratulations on the effort.

Mepis on Top

Mepis just hit #1 on Distrowatch. Well deserved congratulations Warren.

MepisLover

Hi Warren,
I look in awe at the miracle that is the human form, appreciate a well made and finely tuned musical instrument, and love my computer. Without sounding like a domination freak, my computer does exactly what I tell it to do. When and if?? I have problems with the computer I know it is usually because I have done something wrong. Mepis is remarkable, you have marked yourself, team and MepisLovers down in history. Very few pioneers see the acorn they plant grow into a mighty oak within their own lifetime. It is obvious to me that you know the needs of computer users.
Thank you Warren, team and MepisLovers.

sony drx-710ul boot problem

I try to boot off my usb2 dvdrom to boot mepis. This works with knoppix 3.7, but with mepis it does the following:

Looking for MEPIS Linux...........................................................................

Can't Startup filesystem
Halting...

So my bios recognizes the disc and uses it to boot, but i suppose mepis is not loading the correct driver for my drive? not sure how this works. By the way, the drive is firewire and usb2, but my bios only recognizes usb2 drives on boot.... so this needs to work using the usb connection. any idea of how to get mepis to do this?

The wireless driver lsbcmnds

The wireless driver lsbcmnds states hardware present for the boadcom wireless on M5310. However, this is a false positive and in reality must be unloaded "ndiswrapper -e" for the actual bcmwl5 drivers to load and function.
Would the lsbcmds cards work with bcmwl5?

In Pro if you add someone to

In Pro if you add someone to sudoers verify it is working correctly. I would epect a line:

bigsur???? ALL=(ALL) ALL

to grant access with password since the 'NOPASSWD:' option is omitted, However, in reality you get root privileges with no password protection.
