Not able to print from Open Office

Hello,
I am using Simply Mepis 2004.04 and have a Canon BJC-3000 printer connected which appears to be working fine except that I can not print from Open Office as a user but am able to do so when signed on as Root. Also, I am able to print from Kwrite and to do a printer test print when signed in as a user but not from Open Office, Abiword, Gnumeric etc. Does anyone have a suggestion on how to fix this? So far I have removed the printer using the printer manager and then as Root reinstalled it and added myself as a permitted user but this did not change the situation. When I click "print" on a OO document the print dialog box flashes briefly and then disappears and then there is no activity. Thanks for your help.
