can not connect to the internet--problem with pppd and kppp
Posts: 16
good morning folks. i am having trouble with pppd connecting me to the internet.????i am testing a machine to see if it will run mepis. it did well with the ethernet connection, but my friend only has dial-up right now. i've booted in both kernels and tried to log in as both a user and then su with no success. i have a Diamond supra express 56e PRO SupraSST external serial modem. mepis sees the modem, and the modem query comes out okay. here's what happens:
start kppp
hit connect
[login script]
-->ATZ
-->OK
-->ATMOLO
-->OK
-->ATDT5313000
-->CONNECT 115200
(bottom of script window)
"starting pppd"
ERROR
"Timeout has expired while waiting for the PPPD interface to come up.
PPPD ERROR LOG
can not open any of the following files
/var/log/syslog.ppp
/var/log/syslog
/var/log/messages
THIS IS VERY FRUSTRATING!!!
The connection is made, but for some reason pppd doesn't like the handshake with my ISP.?? I bought an external modem because all the mepis forums and the 'point and click linux' book about mepis say external modems should ALWAYS work with MEPIS and any other linux distro. can anyone help with this problem? i've tried everything i know how other than write a driver for the modem.?? if this modem is an external WINMODEM, how can i tell which are not WM's??? what would the box say on the outside??? i've??read the modem howto's, i've researched??all the modems listed on the 'winmodems are not modems' database (which??many are outdated and no longer sold) and i've had no??success.?? any suggestions?
??

thanks for the response.
i am with a local isp, Texas.Net.?? they were one of the original 50 isps in the early 90's.?? they do not require any special software to login.?? i tried changing the authentication setting between PAP, CHAP, and PAP/CHAP at first.?? no success.?? then, i called texas net and they told me their authentication was PAP.?? so i set kppp to that setting still, nothing.?? i installed wvdial with apt-get.?? i thought okay, wvdial might get me online.?? nope.?? it did the same thing.?? i gave it my username and password and did the same thing as kppp.?? it dialed in successfully, connected, all the LED lights on my modem were on, then it hung up and tried to redial.
?? i am trying not to give up on mepis.?? i can connect to the Internet with my broadband connection using mepis--no problem.?? but i show my friends how mepis works, they get all excited, they want it on their system, so i tell them i will install it and then they can register it on this site.?? they give me the okay, but i can not get online with their systems.?? they only have dial up.?? so i decide to 'donate' a modem to them (external serial modem, of course @ $30.00) so they can use mepis and spread the word, but it doesn't work.?? i've google for this problem and found people in similar situations, but no real answers.?? i've tried adjusting the no_ppp_boot, options, provider??and other files to tweak pppd, no success.??
where can i find 2003.10????
Same problem

If you want this I can put it back up on my server. I have 2004.10.02 available.
Then with due regard to a upgrade problem which can stop net and sound, you can update and upgrade to what new stuff you want.
I have the solution

Just solved this two nights ago. Here we go.
1) open etc/ppp/peers/kppp-options and remove the # in front
of noauth if it is there.
2) open etc/ppp/pap-secrets and make sure your isp username
and password are there, again with no # in front of the line.
3) open etc/ppp/peers/provider and first make sure the correct
modem is listed, mine is on com port 2 so my line reads
/dev/ttyS1. Then this is the biggie because this line was very
wrong on mine. The chat script line should read :
connect "/usr/sbin/chat -v -f /etc/ppp/peers/provider"
That should do it.
By the way when putting settings in kppp (click configure button)
i used PAP and CR/LF and CRTSCTS and 115200 and /dev/ttyS1(which in
my case is com port 2).

Thanks I have been having this problem too with my latest install. Any ideas why this is occuring on some installs and not others? It seems a bit random to me. Is this a hardware issue, because it would seem not to be specifically hardware related given that several modem models have had this issue. Also I don't think this is related to any updates that have been issued as patched/unpatched did not seem to make any difference in my case.
Thats a hard one

What ISP is it, for example: Netzero and AOL have their own software that you have to connect through. Is that an issue? If not, then the only thing that I can think of at first is the Authenication setting in KPPP. I had a simular thing happen once, and it was not the ISP or KPPP setting, and it drove me crazy. I setup wvdial and logged on, and after that all worked fine, and I have no clue why. Also, I am still using 2003.10 because simplymepis and mepispro don't have a full compliment of software on install, there I said it and I am sticking to it.
