My USB cable modem

Hey everyone,
Alright, I've just got Mepis installed for the first time. So far I'm loving it! However, I haven't gotten connected to the web through it yet. I didn't realize how accustomed I've become to having the internet.
Anyway, I have a cable modem that once was connected by ethernet but due to lightning, that port doesn't work on the modem anymore. I'm able to connect it by USB though. But Linux isn't using that for internet. It sees the modem under USB devices but won't connect through it.
Can anyone guide me on how to configure this to work?
