ISP RECOMMENDATIONS?
Greetings everyone. Just got up and running and am wondering if anyone has had any success with Netzero and Mepis? I already changed out my internal win-modem for a Robotics external, and my puter now recognizes the modem and will even dial out. Any recommendations for an ISP?

I guess that rather depends on what country you live in.

i have had several isp's & the present one i been using for 1 1/2 years is the fastest at loading pages of them all. Also the cheapest & best, rarely get disconnected & get online quickly. And easily configured for Linux.

If you're in the UK, I quite like the UK Free Software Network - no setup or monthly fees, just call charges (0845 number, so it's the lowest). I usually get about 33k with it and you can use the wizard in KPPPD for ease of setup to configure it.
Of course, if you're not in the UK, I've no idea.

i had a billing problem (double billed) & they were apathetic about solving it. Never did get any action on the problem. I had to bug them every day via email to even get a response. Therefore i cannot recommend them for internet service now.
RoadRunner, if you have access

It is upping its speed to 6MBS and their modems work beautifully with Linux without any additional software. I connect the RoadRunner Toshiba broadband modem to my Linksys WRT54G wireless router and it communicates with the broadcom wireless chip in my Gateway m675prr laptop because MEPIS sets up the laptop automatically during install. MEPIS also sets up the Linksys PCI WMP54G wireless card in the XP.
Here in Lincoln, NE it's a bit pricey at $49/mo, but if you like 20-25 minute downloads of a MEPIS ISO then RR is your broadband.

I had RoadRunner on TimeWarner in Houston until last week. For $45/mo I got a 200 kb/s connection ***maximum***. It was sometimes as slow as dialup. It was difficult to call for service. They were slow to replace defective equipment on their cable system. I now have a 1 mb/s DSL connection for $30/mo. Both companys are Linux-phobic, but that's not a problem. The modems work well.

I am using Netzero - Platinum to connect to the internet.
They have a propriatary dialer compiled for Linux that works as well as the windows version. You can download it from their website, just tell it that you have Lindows/Linspire, and download and install the .deb file.
You have 4hrs online before being bumped. This is unchanged from the windows version, and is noted in the service agreement. I don't know what else to tell you. For $9.95/mo I find it quite suitable for my needs, but you may decide to shop around a bit.
