Installing a .tar file
Posts: 8
Could someone please point me in the direction of a useful tutorial explaining how I can install software on a Debian based system? I am running Mepis 3.3 and want to install some software from a cd, I've been spoiled by .exe files in Windows and I just don't have a clue what to do! I've googled but nothing I've found seems to make much sense, so if anyone knows of a good place for me to start I would be grateful.
One thing, the software on the disc is a tar file, can I install that on a Mepis pc?
Thanks for your reply Adrian

Thanks for your reply Adrian - you mention Mepislovers.org, is it better to post a question there than here?

I like the forum better, I have more controls on how to get reply announcements and in general I've see that more people get responses over there. It's better to get 2 answers than 1, right? Try it.

Also for GUI how-tos look at Sais very detailed guides (too detailed even).
