Sound card does not sound great

I got my sound to work, It sounds great... Except when I play a .mp3 in XMMS.
I may of thought it was the mp3 or the mp3 could of been currupted. But they are fine. This is some info that may be useful to you, to help me solve my problem:

I did not add any ALSA or any other sound thingy, except for the defult ones that are pre-loaded with Mepis.

The sound sound great when I play the test sound in KDE Control center.

My sound (XMMS playing mp3s) like there is either too much power, such as when a bassy part comes alone it's like a crackle sound. But sound great when the volume is down.

I am useing aRtS 0.7.1 (400 ms as the buffer size) and that is the only ones that seems to work.

In the KDE control center, sound is configured: Run the higest possible priority, auto suspend is off, Audio device is Open Sound System (only one that works by defult settings), Full duplex, Custon sampleing rate off (I also turned it on to 44100 Hz, but the problem remains) and Quality is at 16 bits.

I also noticed that I need KMix to run to enable sound. KMix settings are: Output-
Master volume 3/4 up, headphones 3/4 up, PCM middle, AC 97-IEC958 all way down, PC speakers are off.

Input: Cd is on and capture is on, all in middle.

Switches: All off, I noticed that when I loaded Mepis that External Amplifier was on. My sound does not work when it is on, so I shut it off.

-If you need for info to help solve this problem, please ask me.

Thank you

HI Greenpop

I'm not sure if you sorted your sound out yet, but maybe you could try this, since it sounds like the same problem I was having.
Go to your Control Centre then to Sound and Multimedia, then Sound System and click on the Hardware tab.
To the right there is a Quality setting - change this to 16 Bits (High).

Would love to hear if this solves the problem.

Regards,

Pierre
