ACPI

I want to know whether acpi is functioning well in laptops. In my laptop toshiba A60 equium with acpi on my fan will not start or continously work. Looks funny isnt it. with acpi=off my usb devices stop working. I have posted similar message before. Till now no reply from any one. Does it works fine in your computers. I want to know without proper power management how can a OS be acceptable as alternative to windows. I have tried allmost all the distros and every one has some major setback. Mepis is better in the sense that atleast i can get my modem and sound working. Can any one answer my queries.

under construction

ACPI is still a work under construction under Linux. I happen to be lucky with my Dell C840, in which the BIOS takes care of thermal management. You might wanna check out if your BIOS does not have a setting to take care of it all by itself. I find it tricky if the OS needs to do it, for if it should crash, your machine would get fried.

I have googled around a bit for info on your machine, and it looks like the ACPI implementation does not work too well for your machine, but there is quite some info there, so you might run into a solution.

I too find that Linux on Laptops gives some major or minor headaches, but as always, blame the hardware builders, rather than Linux developers. Everything that conforms to open standards works extremely well in Linux, but prying hidden code open is a tedious and slow process....

Newbie or not Newbie, there's always a question
