LaCie drive goes unrecognised..!

My computer has both a firewire 800 card and a USB 2 card. My iRiver gets recognised on the USB connection, but the LaCie 250GB external drive does not. Connecting this to a USB 2 connector makes no difference. Whatever I do the LaCie device does not show up as a partiton or a block...

Bit of a shame considering I use this to back files up...

Have you tried finding the drive with fdisk?
Use -l to list partitions (doesn't have to be mounted).
This will have fdisk look for partitions on sda-sde.
I have found some strange partition tables on USB devices.
# fdisk -l /dev/sd[a-e]
