Sound Card

I just installed a Micron Sound Blaster 16/AWE32 sound card in my system but now I need to know how to get MEPIS to reconize it. Can someone help me on this?

re: Sound Card

I think I can help you.

1. cd /usr/sbin
2. su (enter the password for the root account here)
3. ./alsaconf
4. Hit ok
Alsa should detect your card. If it does, select it and hit return
5. answer no to modifying the .conf file
6. exit

That should do it. If not, let me know and w'll figure it out.

Richard

Sound Card

I ran the asla configuration but the system did not find this card. Does it matter that it is a ISA sound card? Now the system says the ./aslaconf does not exist. What now?

re: Sound Card

I don't understand. If you ran alsaconf and it didn't find your sound card, how could alsaconf no longer be there? Are you sure you're looking in /usr/sbin?

Try this. Run Synaptic, which is on the bottom of the menu bar.
If you hover your mouse over all the little icons on the bottom right hand side you'll see one which says "Synaptic Package Manager".

Once it starts running you'll have to enter the root password.

In the top right-hand corner click on Search

In the Search box enter Alsa and hit return

Right click on alsa-base and click on 'mark for installation'

Then right click on the alsa-modules-xxxx where xxxx corresponds to the version of the Mepis kernel you're using. So, if you're using
Kernel 2.6.11-6 then you'd right click on alsa-modules-2.6.11.6

Once you've done the above then click on 'Apply' at the top of the Synaptic application.

Sit back and let it run.

After that, rerun /usr/bin/alsaconf as I explained in my first email.

Let me know if it finds your sound card.

I can not find any programs called Synaptic Package Manager but did use Kpackage and for some reason the ASLA is no longer installed. I can't find it anywhere. What can I do now???

Ok...here we go. Let's fix

Ok...here we go. Let's fix that sound!

Go to Kmenu >> System >> Konsole

This opens up a nifty little window for you with a prompt in it. At that prompt, type 'su'. This will prompt you for your super user password aka root password that you set during installation. Enter that password. You should now see another prompt that says root@[~]$.

Now we need to run alsaconf...but we need to choose a different option for you. Type 'alsaconf' and make sure that you read the prompt. It will build a database of cards and attempt to detect yours but it will fail. Then you are presented with some options. Choose the 'legacy' option...it should say something after it like this: 'probe legacy ISA chips' or something. Choose that option and see what happens. This should detect your card.

Now we need to ensure the volume is up. See that sound icon down in the bottom right hand corner of your taskbar? Yep, the one that looks like a speaker. Single click on it and hit the mixer button. That will open up Kmix. Ensure that all the volumes bars are at a good level and make sure that all of those green indicator circles are lit up. Make sure nothing is muted. Ok, close it and test the sound. Things should be working!

If not...report back to us here and we'll take you through the next steps of getting this puppy up and running.

Re: Sound Card

The ASLA program is no longer installed for some reason. I looked in Kpackage and no listings under the sound items for asla. Somehow I messed up and uninstalled it.
